I was considering putting a bid on this, but all these fake pages are making me twitchy. Your opinion would be welcomed:

Looks a little too good to be true. It looks to be very well struck (not unusual for this emperor) but very well centred on a round flan. Silvering can be easily 'fudged'. My problem is that from the pictures, I can't see anything wrong with it. Have to think a little 'outside the square'. Who is selling it? Does it have a proven provenance? If ebay, is the feedback OK? If on the 'Bay, I would be tempted to put in a single low bid for it, and take the risk. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have just come back from the VCOINS site. There are quite a few nice coins of Carinus there. Some of those are equally well centred and struck. Get a 'handle' on the pricing, before making up your own mind what the piece in question may be worth.

It looks fine to me-- in fact, the obverse is excellent. There a very many ancient coins in high grade available. High quality is not reason to condemn a coin.

I agree with Warren. The strike and art quality had revived by the time of the "Carus" dynasty", even with those of Probus we see such quality. If it had been replated the entire surface would not have worn parts or encrusted soil on it.

Nothing wrong!! This coin has it's original silvering a very nice Antoninianus. I think it will not be a sheap one. I have a similar quality Carinus in my collection.

£3.78 ($6) is not bad to have it posted internationally. Provided it is posted.

@ pishpash: You missed it, but that's OK. There still seems to be some other nice examples out there.

Is it not best to buy these graded and slabbed from a reputable dealer?

"Slabbed" is a bit like using a swear word with ancients. Grading is very subjective. Reputable dealer, yes if you can afford it, otherwise take precautions like asking the guys and gals on here.

@pishpash You're right, "encapsulated" is probably a better word to use. I would buy one graded and encapsulated from a reputable dealer, not to have an absolute grading value, but to have more certainty that it isn't a fake.
