Not sure about the "8" and my guess on the "6" would be some sort of a clashed die strike.

It looks like a Repunched (RPD) Date to me. There are a couple of F.S. numbers for 1876, but they do not match up verbally. there are a few images on the NGC Varieties website; http://www.ngccoin.com/vp-sub-categ...ted-quartersThis is the closest one I seen on the NGC website: 1876/6 TYPE 2 REV 25C FS-304. Yours appears to be the Type II Reverse; " Letters TATE in STATES are well separated from one another."

oih82w8, It is close, but not quite. As mine has only the one strike inside the 6 . Thank You for posting the link. Who knows maybe it's not listed & a new variety.

I'm still trying to find pics that match it up.

Does anyone know of another site that would have pics of the RPD's?

It is a RPD. I don't have my Briggs book or collected copied of the Gobrecht journal available, but with a RPD that strong I feel sure it is probably a known variety.

I understand what you are saying. But according to the site posted there is a definite difference. The 8 on mine shows re punching. And the posted links do not show re punching of the 8. Secondly the 6 on mine only shows a single re punch rather than a double inside the loop of the 6. Also, the location of the re punch on the 6 is in different locations. Mine is more in the center of the loop, where as Heritage's is more towards the top of the loop. The FS-304 is the closest, but, I'm not sure that is it. I appreciate the help w/ this one. I've been scratching my head over this.

It definitely isn't FS-304. The repunching in the 8 is fine and delicate, the coin seems to be a early die state. The FS-304 shows much heavier repunching in loop of the 6. For an FS-304 to lose enough repunching evidence to match the op coin it would have to have either extreme die wear or to have been severely polished. And if it was repolished to the point that it looked like the op coin there would be no trace of repunching on the 8 like the op shows unless the 304 die originally had repunching on the 8 similar to that seen on the 6 in the Heritage photo. The FS-304 never had that.
