Hello, I recently got the coin pictured below as a gift, but did not receive much information on it. I do like the way it looks very much, but I'm not a coin collector (there might be a chance for me yet :)) and thus I have no idea if it's even an authentic coin.

According to what I found on the "interweb", it seems to be a UK 1 Shilling coin from 1826. The coin I have has a diameter of 23 mm, but I have no way of weighing it. A magnet does not attract it :).

If it is an authentic coin, would you be so kind to tell me approximately what grade it is how much it would be worth if I decided to sell it ? I'm thinking not too much, but you never know :).

Thank you in advance for your help.

P.s. : the pictures were taken in artificial light (2 led bulbs).

Hi ad_litteram and welcome to the Forum!

The shilling looks genuine to me. I'd grade it as Fine.

Michael Coins (London dealer) has one in this grade for sale at £10 sterling.

It's quite a common date and in this condition the bullion content (.925 silver) makes up a lot of the value.

I'd be very happy to get one of these as a gift!

Thank you for your very quick reply. I have to say I'm surprised such a lovely a gift (and it wasn't even my birthday) :). It kinda surprises me it's authentic. :)

Anyway, I bid on a few british coins on ebay. If I win, is it ok if I post them in this thread to be "verified" or should I open another one ? (i bid on a few shillings <newer than the one above>) and a few half-crowns. I have to admit I bid on them mainly for their high silver content :)

Thank you again for your help.

Buy a book and save expensive mistakes.

This would be a good start.

Great suggestion, thank you. I won a few bids, hope I've done my research correctly and didn't get messed up :).

I'll post some pictures here when I get them.

P.s. : I also bought an "ancient" coin. I think it might have been an expensive mistakes. I'll open a new thread in the appropriate section for that. :)

Hello again. As promised, i'll post a few pictures of the coins I bought from ebay. I paid 26 pounds for all of them (including shipping)

What do you think ? Was it worth it ? Don't spare my feelings, if you think i'd better stick to buying anything else than coins, tell me :))

Thank you very much for your input.

I think that you didn't do too badly, but I like old, worn English coins.
The 1889 half crown is definitely the best one and the 1856 shilling is not too bad.
The others are damaged in some way, scratched or dented, this hurts the value.
over all not the worst purchase, but you did probably pay a little too much.

Thank you very much for your reply.

I thought the 1872 shilling was in the best condition, clearly I was wrong :). No wonder then it was the cheapest of all the shillings. The 1873 is indeed bent, if I had seen that in the pictures the seller posted, I wouldn't have bought it, but it's not his fault I'm "blind" :)

I did win another coins from the same seller and should be getting them in (i hope) 7 to 10 days. Halfcrowns and shillings again (1 half-crown, 3 shillings for about the same price as these I already posted). I clearly overpaid on one of the shillings (william IV, 1834), but for some reason I really wanted that one :)

The 1872 is the least worn, but it has a large scratch, which makes its condition not as good

I also like old William IV coins. I will be interested to see it.

Thank you again for your input. And if nobody minds, i'll post pictures of the new "lot" as soon as I get them.

Meanwhile, I really "broke" my wallet :\. I bid for 11 (!) 2007 comm. 5 pound coins. And won them. Ouch. That's what happens when you lose your head. I'm guessing no one here is interested in those. Right ? :)

Well, coin collecting is all about what you like. But if it was me I think I might go for coins in ... slightly better condition! I don't know what you spent on the £5 coins, but I'd have thought that for less than half of that you could have had something like this:

Just an idea! (And no, I have no connection with the seller! It's a pic off ebay)

I agree with Tom.
Quality not quantity is one lesson I have learnt in 45 years of interest in coins.
Although the silver Victorian coins you have bought have history,at the end of the day they are worth only a tiny bit
above bullion.
ebay is the classic place to off load rubbish. There are some nicer coins but competition can be fierce.
Try a couple of UK dealers and get to know your chosen area of collecting.

For the moment I'm not fixated on british coins, but on silver coins in general :). The older the coin, the better. I still haven't received my ancient coin yet (but I won't post it in this thread anyway).

Is it ok if I post the 5 pound coins here after I get them or should I open a new thread ? They are all from 2007, encapsulated proof coins with 0.84 oz. ASW, and most have a mintage of 30.000. I paid just shy of 200 for all of them (11 pieces, 2 are identical, all (except one) have COA's.

So here are (some of) my latest purchases...

I'm especially curious what you think about the shillings and the half-crown. Thank you :)

I cant comment on the modern proof coins, but the shillings and Half Crown seem to be in better condition then the previous lot: no dents, beds or large scratches. I feel that the shillings have been cleaned but it is hard to tell from the pictures.
