I'm looking at a 1942/1 D Mercury dime on ebay. It is raw and looks fairly nice. It is sitting at a reasonably low price right now but will surely go up. I was wondering if anyone can tell me whether the 42/1 dimes are known to be counterfeited or altered. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information on this. I have bought a couple of fake Trade dollars in the past, so am a little hesitant buying raw coins anymore.

Not to scare you away from coins but key dates or high value varieties like that are the most counterfeited/altered coins there are.

Truth. The 1942/41-D is a much more subtle overdate than its' more notorious Philadelphia sibling which would be far harder to fake. The Denver coin's pickups are smaller and less well-known. If you're comfortable attributing the variety, and the images are of sufficient clarity to be sure, then go ahead and bid but leave it alone if it's in any way out of your comfort zone.

If it's raw, be carefull. Almost any coin worth more than a few dollars has been counterfeited or a similar one doctored up. As already noted the 42/41 is more clear so not to easy to fake but that 42D/41 can have a 42 doctored up to appear as a overdate. Not worth the chance if it's raw and on ebay.
