Here is an 1859 IHC I am considering for my type set. to me, it appears to have been lightly cleaned. normally I do not entertain cleaned coins but this one has a good eye appeal and I dont think it was harshly cleaned. can I get some comments on grading and opinions, as well as how a light cleaning, would affect this coins value

It appears to be a high AU grade, four diamonds and light rub on the hair.

As far as value? I have no idea other than I would look elsewhere for a "problem free" coin. I have seen where values have been cut in half for "detail" coins.

Is the "1" repunched below the base of the existing "1"? For a possible Snow-1

AU55 or better, cleaned? I think it was lightly cleaned also. As ohi82w8 said, there are better ones out there, this one would probably be around 50% or FMV due to the cleaning, though it's not bad, unless you can get it for a deal, keep looking. I've seen some really nice AU slabbed by TPG companies on ebay this past month, they have all been fairly reasonably priced too.

thanks for the comments guys. the current bid on this is $36. I would expect it to go for around $80. which would be a decent price. other than the light cleaning this coin appears to be problem free. I would not be able to afford this coin at retail so I have a tough decision to make...fill the hole or keep looking. it comes back to the old question, would you rather have a higher grade that was lightly cleaned or settle for a lower grade problem free one.

I think it has a heavier cleaning then you think. Looks very "shiny" and you can see the original patina in the device which makes me think it was scrubbed. I would pass. A nice EF40 goes for about $100, I would much rather have a nice problem free coin then a higher grade detail coin.
