I picked these two up today, an 1840 East India Co and a 1900. I paid £35 hammer for both, so I think I did OK. Not great scans but I hope the 1840 is XF...reverse looks better.

Questions-About-Colonial-India-Silver-Rupees

On my last Rupee pick up I made an error I feel. I bought 10 Rupees, 1860's and later and they had black gunk on some of them. I sent them to NCS to get them sorted out and that should have been that. Stupidly I then got them slabbed by NGC and got some poor results which I think will put buyers off more than if I had not paid all these fees and left them raw. So, the question is, should I leave them in their slabs or pop them out if I ever need to sell. Seems a shame to conserve and grade coins and then crack them out. Learnt my lesson I guess. Also, are any of these coins in terms of the type/mint mark etc of particular interest to collectors or are they all common?

marbury518- Nice! You did very well! I'm quite jealous, especially of that 1840 EIC Rupee.

The 1920 1 Rupee MS62 came from the same group, so that might have helped me to break even, maybe.

Those are nice coins.

I actively collect Indian material - but I'd never buy one that that was slabbed as I buy coins to hold and am not interested in "degrees of perfection".

If you are buying these to sell, I guess you'd have to consider where the market is if thinking about slabbing.

Regarding these three coins in particular, given their results... what exactly were you expecting out of those pieces? Do you feel that these results are mind-bogglingly wrong and whoever graded them is smoking crack? I would guess, all else being equal, that these results probably reflect what a sensible person should be seeing on them... moderately circulated pieces, additionally with issues on a couple.

Absolutely true if you're planning on not revealing issues to prospective buyers and hoping someone who doesn't know better comes along...
