Why does the 2008-S 5 piece proof quarter set carry such a big premium? I saw the other 5 piece quarter proof sets for less than $10.
Rest in Peace

Hmm, this one is a bit of a head scratcher for me... I see the 2008 clad set sells for roughly $30 give or take on its own (clad not silver). Yet, I have found several examples of runs of 4 or more that included the 2008 set (example 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008) that sold for $30 on average?!? In fact there is a run of 1999-2008 for $74.99 or best offer BIN http://www.ebay.com/itm/COMPLETE-CL...390660621410

Your best bet may be to buy a lot like that and sell off the ones you dont want. I am not really into quarters to a great degree, so I have no idea why that one commands a higher premium... It appears the people selling in lots are missing the boat on this one.

I was wondering because I have noticed that particular set was in the $45-$50 on ebay and in Red Book while the others were much under $10 on ebay and Red Book. Really can't spend a lump sum like that so I was thinking about piecing a set one at a time.

Yeah, thats the unfortunate part. We all have budgets to stick to. Situations like this hurt when your only choice is to shell out $30 for an individual item, or $75 for a lot which contains that item and essentially you will effectively get the item your after for roughly $10, but of course eating the $75 until the others could be sold. One thing I have learned in my time here though, lots and lots of patience will usually get you the item your after at the price you want to pay. Watch for auctions that end at times when the least people will be shopping. Increases your chance to pick one up at the best price. Just keep your eyes open for deals in general. It will likely take some time of course, but thats about all you can do.

Being the last year set of the 50 State Quarter program could carry a higher premium, just like 1999 the first year of the program.

I think the Hawaii quarter is the key coin in the set. These coins seem to command a higher premium on ebay that the other quarters in the set.

The 2008 Clad Proof Sets sold out early, hence their premium. This happened again with the 2012 Proof Sets, both Silver and Clad for that year.

Agreed, the most cost-effective way to get the 2008 Clad Set (Quarters or Full Set) is to buy a 1999-2008 run.

These are the mintages of the 5-coin proof sets (clad). It does seem that the 2008 set does have the lowest mintage but looking at the numbers its only by a couple of hundred. I'm not sure if that's enough to really make a difference. I just don't know if being the first or last coins in a series really makes all that much difference in prices. And looking at the last 2 years of the Statehood Quarters program, the numbers are down compared to the rest of the series but I believe it's because people were losing intrest in the series by that time.

1999: 1,169,958

2000: 937,600

2001: 799,231

2002: 764,479

2003: 1,235,832

2004: 951,196

2005: 987,960

2006: 882,000

2007: 672,662

2008: 672,434

The price premium is because of the early sellout, not the mintage.
Compare the price of the 1999 Silver Proof Set @ 804,565 mintage to the 2008 Silver Proof Set @ 763,887 mintage.

For the 2012-S circulation finish Quarters, El Yunque bags/rolls fetch the highest prices even though they are the highest mintage variety, simply because they sold out before the other designs. Many collectors only became aware of the BU 2012-S Quarters after the El Yunques had sold out.

Last year of issue, lowest mintage. Yes they did sell out early but paying a premium for that is foolish because eventually they become evenly disbursed just like all of the other sets and they are no harder to acquire and the premium goes away. They will never stop being the last year and the lowest mintage. As interest in the series declines so will prices but it will always be one of the better sets for the series.
