I have seen people make references to how TPG standards have changed over time. I'm new to coin collecting and am wondering if someone could describe these changes. Have grading standards gotten generally higher or lower, or is it specific to certain types of coins?

I was looking at my Morgan dollars and I noticed that I had a couple MS 64s that looked as good to me as a 65. They were all graded by NGC but the 65 has a different style sticker on the reverse side which is smaller (about half the size of the other style sticker).

A lot of dealers are making money right now buying up old holders and getting them upgraded. Plus grades were added recently and those sell for more. I don't know that a lot of coins jump a whole point when sent back in. Some coins have just as good of a chance of being downgraded when sent back.

Geohoarder,
In general, grading standards have grown looser. Especially for MS coins where a single grade can demand a much higher premium. The standards for circulated coins have remained fairly stable.
We call this 'gradeflation.'
The TPG people make money selling the hope of a higher grade and that has fueled the resubmission rate.
I admire your willingness to grade yourself. It is a skill that is lacking among coin 'investors.'

I have a 1854 Dime that was graded by ANACS (old White Holder) as AU50. I purchased this from someone who cracked it out to put in his 7070 album and kept the slab insert. Fast forward a couple of years and I just got the results back from being resubmitted to ANACS (Insider Special) and it was graded as AU55.

So, this just goes to show ya that grading is subjective and can change over time.

matthewvincent hit the nail on the head. It's all about TPGs generating revenue. I've seen many stories of people resubmitting coins multiple times until they get the grade they want. The coins never changed, only the opinions did (or the TPG finally generated the revenue they wanted).
