I'm considering placing a bid or two on this coin that is at a local auction house. Can I get your opinions on grade, value, and authenticity? They are selling it with a bunch of common date gold coins and I'll be kicking myself if I don't bid and it goes for common gold prices.

Thanks,
Joe2007

I'm inclined to think it real, based on the die crack between the dot and "U" of "UNITED" and the date alignment, both characteristic of Variety 1. Looks like a remarkably well-preserved example, no worse than high AU. A *lot* rides on your ability to determine if the surfaces are original; that makes the difference between a $2000 coin and a $4000 one. And those are the actual value numbers I'm considering for it.

If by some chance it's Uncirculated, better negotiate a second mortgage.

with all. Very nice coin! At least high AU, with a shot at MS, although I'm leaning against it.. Very hard to tell for sure with these photos though. And even harder to tell if the surfaces are original. Check it out in person and know what to look for..

If this one goes for common gold prices... Well wow... Jump all over that... Best of luck!

Or tell me where the auction is just kidding.

Thank you for the excellent advice. I'm thinking that the coin has been cleaned sometime in the past. Hopefully I will be able to attend the auction preview and I will see if I can take some better quality pictures. I probably won't get it, if the early online bidding is any indication there is at least two people that have some idea of the value of this coin. It went from under melt to over $700 in the last few hours.

Thanks again,

You're at the point now where you have a coin with enough value that it's worth submitting to one of the respected TPG's.
That will solve the question of authenticity and let you know if it has been cleaned/altered.
And you'll get a grade as a bonus if it's original.

True Kanga but first he may have to shell out a lot of bucks before he can send it to the TPG. And if it doesn't come back good or gradable, he's stuck for the loss.
