I have an opportunity to buy this old coin. The person selling wants an offer instead of stating a price.

Dilemma! I know nothing aboot these Large Cents!

Here she is:

So...if you were in my shoes, how much would you offer?

IMO, I would pass on this one due to poor eye appeal.

I get where you're coming from, but if I have an opportunity to own an 18th Century coin for a decent amount, I will take it.

I'm not looking to resell...it's strictly for collecting purposes only.

Is it an overdate? Without knowing more and just looking at the images, I'd go $100 tops and that might be too high.

Yeah, I just don't know. I cruised ebay looking at late 18th Century cents and the price variances are immense!

Coins similar to this one have sold from $90 to $300!

Edit: this is not an overdate.

That goes in my favor, then. Thanks for the info!

American history is fascinating during that year. Thomas Jefferson defeated John Adams in the presidential election!

Afterimage, do you have a local coin store? I was once offered some coins by a friend who worked for a charity and sometimes received donations of foreign and obsolete coins. If he received anything of value I would ask the LCS what they would pay him for the coins, and base my offer on that if I wanted any for my collection. This was in the days before E-Bay.

I do have a local LCS, but I would trust the North Korean Information Minister more than those snake oil salesmen!

They once offered to buy an 1879CC Morgan dollar off of me for $30! Rats! Every last one of them! I am very polite to them however, since they all carry firearms during business hours.

But as we all learned from our annoying know-it-all friends in 2000, there was no Year Zero, so an 1800 large cent is indeed an 18th century coin!

It would be my choice to pass. There are better values out there. I understand that you like the coin but it's not great. I respect that you are attracted to a piece of history so I'd say go in the $80-90 range.

The problems with this coin, will get it a details grade.
And a coin shop would drop at least a grade.

IMO a coin shop might pay in the $45 to $55 range.

TROOF! With the caveat that a jerk with a gun shouldn't be mocked!

Okay...I've decided to pitch a $75 bid his way. We'll see if I get laughed outta the room.

Wish me luck!

I'd offer 50 bucks. Eye appeal isn't great but it does have some detail left as well as being pretty danged old.

Yeah, I agree that the coin isn't the greatest of examples. I am more interested in the historical significance rather than a numismatic value.

The Holidays are just around the corner, so I need to keep my habit of spending money on coins in check.

For now...

I will try and go the $50 dollar route as suggested and will go no higher than $75.

Thank you for all of the replies!
