Hi, This is my first post. Very happy to be here. Recently my coin collecting juices were rekindled. My son is approaching 6 years old and bringing back memories, and hoping maybe he'll be interested in collecting coins. Now to my question. Back in 1979 I went to the bank in Brunswick GA and just for the grins, asked them for 4 rolls of uncirculated SBA dollars. The bank gave me 4 rolls of 1979P in clear plastic screw top tubes. I've kept them untouched 'til now except for about 10 dollars which I spent a long time ago. Just became aware of the SBA wide rim, so I looked at the top coin in one roll and it appears to be a wide rim/near date, but I'm not sure, so here's a scan. If it is a near date, would like some suggestions on how to get the most bang for the buck from the situation. Should I look at every coin, and get the near dates graded? Sell them ungraded? ? ? Any suggestions are much appreciated. Thanks. Ed. *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***

Quote: Should I look at every coin, and get the near dates graded? Sell them ungraded? ? ? The banged up ones sell ungraded but definitely check all of them for it. As far as which ones to get graded its going to depend on how many you have. The MS 64/65s on ebay seem to get about 30 dollars. One of those isn't enough to recoup the shipping fees for doing so, but if you had 10 considered you paid face value it would be worth it. A MS66 however seems to sell well north of 100 dollars so just one would be worth it in that case.

A MS-66 would be worth the expense of slabbing. Anything less than that would be questionable, and would only make sense if you had a bunch of them to ship at the same time to save on postage and insurance both ways. An individual or just a couple pieces below MS-66 and it will cost you as much or more then the coins are worth to have them slabbed.

that is a near date. If you find you have 4 rolls of them, mete them out slowly or you will flood the market.

Thanks for the replies. I looked at one roll and don't you know, the only one with a near/date was the one on top :-( Funny, yeah wouldn't it have been nice to have a whole roll of 'em. Will tcheck the other 3 rolls today. Thanks. Ed.

Ok, so I went through all 4 rolls and only found 2. I'll take it, better than 0. Interesting that there were a couple of 1980 dates also. So I guess they just don't roll right off the press into the tubes.
