Hello,
Coin Newbie here. I purchased 2 tubes of Canadian Silver Maples a couple months ago. When they arrived, they all had the same issue, missing top lip on the queen, looks like a moustache. I had posted a discussion on them in CCF in a more general area, but still have a question. Several people suggested I keep them as "error" coins, but I was trying to figure out what constitutes an error coin and what is just considered poor quality? Would these really be considered error coins? I would probably sell some off on ebay, but want to be 100% accurate on the description. I would hate to list as error if in fact, that is not what it really is, it's just poor quality bullion coin. Any clarifications would be appreciated. PS: I tried to research before posting, but couldn't find anything on my question. Sorry if it's been beat to death somewhere else!

It's both an error and an example of poor quality.
Each collector must decide for themselves whether it's collectible or not. IMO not.

Mint quality error-----worthless, unless the market differs. The error has to be spectacular and desirable to command a premium. You might have to wait 75 years for that to happen.

Well, it does give her a nice toothbrush mustache.

It's definitely a noticeable error - I'd put one on ebay, just to see how it does.

For sure errors. Possibly rare errors too, I think they'd sell. Lot of new error collectors out there.

Most (if not all) errors are just examples of poor quality. By definition, they were not intended to be as they are. In a perfect world, where every coin is subjected to a thorough inspection, no error coins would make it to the public.

When it comes to what is collectable, my personal view is that it should be something that a layperson could look at and say "that shouldn't be like that", or "that's neat". Since errors have existed as long as coins have, the markets have established the premiums associated with various errors, and generally, the valuable ones are the ones that I described.

I don't really collect errors, but I do find them interesting. That being said, I don't really find anything interesting (in a premium sense) about the coin you posted.

Thanks for the replies, that helps. What caught my attention was that with the naked eye, it just looked like there is no upper lip. It was the first maple I had ever seen in person. Just thought it was a bit weird. I then looked under magnification and saw the Moustache look! That's what started my quandary about errors and quality and the difference, etc.

Again, thanks for the info.
