I inherited this penny so I have no idea about it. it is in white collectors square, mint condition, with an elephant head to the right of lincoln's face. pix attached taken with cell phone through 10x loupe.

What can you tell me?

Looks like a counter stamped coin. The elephant would have been stamped into the surface by a third party, possibly to advertise a circus. Cents produced at the Philadelphia mint, do not have a mint mark.

An elephant is a 1st for me. I'd just keep it in my
collector square.

Here's another example of third party coin stamping.

Not long ago there was a sort of collection of those types of stamped coins. Not sure of the details, but I think there was a sort of display thing with a large variety of those. One of the more famous ones was the Lincoln Cent with Kennedy's face stamped in fromt of Lincoln. Also, those were sold with a card explaining all the similarities. Not sure how to find old posts here but there are those here that could find old references like that and post a link to them.

Yes Allez, I found it CRHing. And yes, I guess mine isn't a stamp, it does look more like engraving or etching. Sorry not trying to hijack this thread. I do love the elephant and the 76 stamped cents. I hope I come across more!
