I also have a couple 1974 proof sets that look like that, anything special about those?
Thanks

There were no mint set produced in 1982 or 83 ,,what you have are proof sets . That is the typical holder for the time . Metalman

HI BAD. What you have are proof sets there were no mint set made in 1982, and almost all 82 proof sets have that cameo or deep cameo finish. They are in my opinion some of the nicest proof set the mint has put out to date.As for the 74 proof sets, they also have cameo and deep cameo surfaces this is also a very popular set. The original issue price for the 74 set was $7.00 and the original issue price for the 82 was $11.00 what you have is two of the best examples in my opinion of proof sets made to date by our mint. Bruce.

Bruce.
Bottomline, there's nothing special about these sets then? Still looking for an answer to my frosted, cameo, deep cameo question.

Bad. Your right here goes TPG use these terms on there holders one TPG might say deep cameo, and the other might say ultra cameo. It is all about the mirror like finish and some coins in proof just have more of a mirror like finish then others but they all mean the same just different ways of saying it, it's all about the finish and the opinion of the one grading it.

There is also a great glossary section to the left under navigation. I have used it many many times and it has helped tremendously.

To answer your question, NO. Nothing special about that set.

Wow, it's hard to believe that all the proof sets from those years are nice cameo's. I have a lot of proof sets and those are the only ones that look that spectacular. Is it worth sending them off for grading? I'm pretty sure they will grade very high, like MS-65 to MS-69?

On your 1982 proof sets. Greysheet the coin dealer newsleter. Says bid price is 3.60 and ask price is 4.00 bucks on the 1982 s proof sets. I would not waste your money sending them to be graded since the grading fees cost more money than what they are worth wholesale. Most dealers out there pay under 10 % the bid price on proof sets if you tryed to sell them to you locol dealer. Most dealers would pay 3.24 per set on those 1982 proof sets. I hope that helps you before you spend money to have them graded . Dale

And I quote right out my Proof and Mint set "bible". "All coins in the 1982-S Proof Set were intended to have a Cameo or Deep Cameo Finish" "All of the Cents in the 1982-S Proof Sets are Large Date variety and all are of the old bronze composition (as opposed to the newer Copper-plated Zinc). Reportedly, some Proof Small Date Sets were struck in Bronze, but none have been seen and all were supposedly destroyed. On the Large Date Cents, the 2 of the date is close to the rim; on the Small Date Cent, the date is far away from rim" Picture on page 119 of 2008 Red Book. If you had the coins graded they would grade PR for PCGS or PF for NGC. Just my humble input.

Thanks for the input! Maybe I'll hang on to these for another 25 years.
