I hadn't until I bought this coin at the local coin show recently; I hann't got around to scanning it until just now. Ariarathes V Eusebes Philopator was king of Cappadocia (a region in what is now central Turkey) from 163 BC to 130 BC.

The obverse shows the king's portrait, while the reverse shows Athena standing holding Victory. The kings name and titles appear in the square around, in Greek: BASILEWS ARIARATHOY EYSEBOYS (King Ariarathes, the Pious). This coin is also now my oldest coin with an actual date on it: the year is at the bottom, gamma-lambda, or "33". As Ariarathes V only ruled for 33 years, this coin would date from right at the end of his reign, 131-130 BC. This late date may well explain why it's still in such pristine condition.

For a coin that is 21 centuries plus in age, it looks fantastic.

Seems like he had a tragic life. Not so good to be the King. Having to deal with the meddling Romans, hostile neighbors and competitors for the throne. His wife Nysa killed five of their six children? You'd think he would have caught on after she did away with the first two or three.

Great coin with a lot of history!!

Almost the same design as Demetrius I Soter....

162-150 BC, Silver Drachm, Antioch, Seleucid Kingdom, Demetrius I - S.E. 161=152/1 BC, 4.1+grams ( and about 17mm in diameter) . SNG Spaer-1285; Houghton-163; SMA-126. Obv: Diademed head r., fillet border; Rx: legend; cornucopia; below, control-mark and date (AEP).

"Demetrius acquired his surname of Soter, or Saviour, from the Babylonians, whom he delivered from the tyranny of the Median satrap, Timarchus. Timarchus, who had distinguished himself by defending Media against the emergent Parthians, seems to have treated Demetrius' accession as an excuse to declare himself an independent king and extend his realm into Babylonia. His forces were however not enough for the legal Seleucid king: Demetrius defeated and killed Timarchus in 160 BCE, and dethroned Ariarathes, king of Capadoccia. The Seleucid empire was temporarily united again."

I have this coin with me the portrait looks really nice
