Hello all,
Here's another coin from my small ancients collection. This one depicts Julia Paula, one of the wives of Emperor Elagabalus. I have a daughter named Paula and a niece named Julia and I thought it was very cool that both their names appeared on a 1700-year-old coin. It took some searching to locate a specimen that was well-struck so the names were clear and I was pleased to find this one. I have a few questions:
Does anyone have an opinion on the grade and value for this specimen?
At the time of issue (about 220 AD) what was the quality of the silver being used to make denarii? Was the alloy "debased"?
Sap, would you perhaps have any more details to share about the history or significance of this issue?
Thanks!

Julia Paula was the first wife of emperor Elagabalus. She was from one of the old aristocratic Roman families and it was in effect an arranged marriage, designed to bestow some air of legitimacy and authority on the new, young, foreign emperor.

The marriage lasted only a year (219-220 AD) and the coins are thus hard to come by, though not necessarily expensive. Virtually all of Julia Paula'a coins feature Concordia ("Agreement") on the reverse; another case of "wishful thinking" propaganda on the coinage, given the general lack of "agreement" in their marriage.

This type (Sear 7655) catalogues at $90 in Fine, $225 in EF; I'd be inclined to call that coin at least gVF, probably EF.

The reign of Elagabalus was well into the "debasement" stage of Roman silver coinage, though still good enough for the coins to look "silvery". Standard alloy at the time was somewhere around 40% silver.
Don't say "infinitely" when you mean "very"; otherwise, you'll have no word left when you want to talk about something really infinite. - C. S. Lewis
