I have been getting into the modern commemorative's lately. To date, I collected 43 silver dollars and 8 half dollars.

Since most modern half dollars commem's are clad, I usually buy them as part of a set. I generally stick with silver dollars because it contains .77 of an oz of silver.

While reading the 2014 Red Book I noticed this 2011P US Army half dollar UNC valued at $90, while the proof is at $45.

Thinking it was a typo, I check ebay and raw OGP coins are $50-60 and slabbed coins exceed $100+.

I'm just wondering why this coin has gone through the roof. Mintage is low at; 39,442, it is a MS coin not a proof, and the subject is the US Army. So could these items really affect the price of this coin that much?

welder - the mintage number is the lowest of the modern halves. That drove the price up on the secondary market, but it has come down quite a bit of late. Many of us have also noticed for a long time that the hidden gem of most modern commemoratives are the MS coins. These almost always have lower mintage numbers and are harder to find at lower prices than the proofs.

The current generals half is actually running at a lower mintage rate than the Army half...

Their sales were also cut short like the 2012 sets which gave their premiums a big jump. Combine that with the fact that their quality was very poor and you also have some people chasing coins to try and get graded 70s. PCGS doesn't have a single MS 70 for that coin and the Proof 70 numbers are miniscule for a modern proof coin.

Their premiums have come down some as more people got them that missed out, which I suspect well see with the 2012 sets as well but it will probably always be one of the more expensive commem halfs from its time frame.

Well that explains why I see them going for so much on ebay. I am trying to complete the 18 coin modern commemorative half set and currently have 11 of the 18 (4 on the way from a buy I did on here) and that is one of the 7 I am missing. I am not doing a unc or proof set was just doing what I could get for now and figured when I finished the set I would go back and maybe get sets of both the unc and proof (so if I bought the proof buy the unc and vice versa). Sounds like I need to go for the unc on this one first.

Looks like the 2013 UNC half dollar commemoratives mintages are on par with 2012 mintages.
