Is there such a thing? Anyone have a picture or a link? This may sound a bit newbie of me, but I'm at the point in my collecting that I'm starting to think long term storage and care of my collection. My collection only includes Canadian coin albums from large cent to the toonie...1 coin representing each year with a few exceptions. Just looking to make sure they stay preserved. Also, Is it maybe a good idea to "clean" my coins before putting them in my books? I'm not saying like dip or scrub coins, I'm referring to oils from peoples hands or chemicals from water they have come in contact with. You know, to keep them from getting those darn lil' black marks on them or does it not matter if you they are kept in a climate controlled area. I have tried to find some of these answers on sub sections but not really finding a real answer so I thought I would just ask. Thanks guys and Gals!

I've read about using a fireproof safe (2hr rating I think) and using a desiccant to control the moisture. Some desiccants can be heated and reused. Google can tell you how.

Control the climate of the room the safe is stored in. I run a large dehumidifier (with a drain hose) in my basement, 24/7 for normal stuff. For my valuable coins, I don't use a safe, I have a safety deposit box, with silica gel desiccant packets in it that I replace every month in the summer, and every 2-3 months in winter.

I would not bother trying to preserve your coins, although some people swear by olive oil soaks or renaissance wax (more for ancient coins). Not much is going to affect your coins, in your lifetime, especially if you control the humidity.

The only real ambient atmospheric threat to coins is humidity.
Atmospheric temperature with coins stored in living quarters should never be a problem by itself.

In humid climates, the inclusion of silica gel with your coins is a good idea.

There have been lots of discussions about the types coin accessories available for coin storage, and individual likes. For long term storage soft PVC for flips and album pages is not favoured by most in the CCF.

There have been lots of discussions about the secure storage of coins, but these could equally apply to other items we would like to keep secure as well.
Fire proof safes and gun safes are used, but your budget may restrict what you can provide for your coins. If these are used, throw in a couple of small bags of silica gel.

Gun safes are a mandatory legal requirement for firearms in Australia, so why not use them for coins as well?

When it comes to cleaning, the general response is "Don't", although acetone and distilled water are favoured by most if you really have to.

SPP ,desiccant pkgs in a saftey deposit box? Is that a necessity or a safety
practice? I'd have to try and find room some how.

I collect mint state "Red" 1-cent coins, and while they are in PCGS holders, I still think it is important to protect my coins. The bank's ambient humidity is not something I can control...
