Well, here's an intriguing medal that looks like it served many years as a faithful pocket piece.

Since the 50th (Golden Jubilee) of Confederation fell in 1917, the Great War put a kibosh on celebrations that year.

To make up for it, we overcompensated for the Diamond Jubilee (60th) in 1927. This piece probably carried the party into the 30s and beyond...

I couldn't pass up this one, especially for under 10 cents!

And yes, there's a bit of crud stuck to it. Older coppers seem to go gummy on me, maybe the result of tiny oxidation pits forming a clingy surface.

Cool. I've definitely not seen one that worn before.

What was the original issue price? I have one that has turned a very deep dark green, I kind of like it.

I'm guessing this was a pocket piece

10 cents, to the best of my knowledge.

It's the same size as a large cent, although produced 7 years after the large cent was discontinued.

Whoops!

It was actually the same-sized 1939 Royal Visit medal that cost 10 cents from any post office.

The 1927 medal was distributed to every schoolchild in the country for free, like my 2005 Alberta Centennial medal (my dad still has his 1980 75-years of Alberta medal).

So it's more understandable for this to have been used as a lucky pocket piece, although the fact that it made it in the pocket for so long without getting lost amazes me.

Also, the high-relief busts on the other side created a matching depression on the other side - it is this depression that has escaped the most wear. In direct light, tilting the coin shows the slightly warped surface.

Kind of like the one they did for QEII back in '77. I remember getting one. I think it was made of aluminum.
