it doesn't look genuine to me. Weak denticles, lumps of metal, and has an odd color which I have seen on a few other Chinese fakes.

The reverse denticles alone are enough to scare me off.

His feedback is also pretty bad which should tell you something.

I sent an inquiry about the weight ... I'm wondering if this item might have spent some time in a tumbler so as to artificially age it?

It doesn't look real to me. The denticles fade away on the reverse under the word Dollar and are replaced by some odd blobs of metal.
From his description, I learned that silver was more valuable than gold at the time this was made. I wonder why gold dollars were so much smaller that silver dollars in 1873?
My suggestions is RUN!

99.99% sure this is a fake. And I feel pretty good about that other .01% too.

Quote: I learned that silver was more valuable than gold at the time this was made. I wonder why gold dollars were so much smaller that silver dollars in 1873? I looked at kitco's historical prices and for 1873, the average yearly price of silver was about $1.42/oz while gold was fixed at $20.67/oz. It seems like this is an attempt by the seller to help sell the coin.

The seller wrote back to me. He didn't weigh the item as I requested and merely quoted the weight given in the RedBook.
