Sorry, no pic.
Found a 1785 Vermontis copper at a local shop.
Considering picking it up. It is priced at $300. It has G details with environmental damage. Thoughts on price?

Just double checking. Ryder 4 (and 5) are VERMONTIS. Would sure like to see it. Which side of the landscape is the sun on?

Unfortunately, I did not take a pic (or even a mental pic for that matter). Just looking for some general info on rarity as I know little about Vermont coppers but I do know the 1785 series was fairly desirable. I saw the landscape and the flip said VERMONTIS, which is really all I can remember at this point (my memory is bad). Figured at $300 it might be worth picking up.

Ok I see now, Ryder 5 was a contemporary counterfeit. There is no way I can discern a fake of a fake, at least not in Vermonts.

There are both cast and struck copies of Ryder 5 , both of which I'm sure you don't have. 1785 are of the VERMONTS and VERMONTIS varieties of Landscape coppers, Ryder 2-4. There were 3 varieties of the 1786 Landscapes, VERMONTENSIUM, Ryder 6-8.
If a pic can be posted, that would be of great help.

While I am sure the Ryder 5 is un-obtainably rare, I would worry that the one in the shop is a modern fake of Ryder 5. I will stop by after work, take some pics, and post my findings.

My memory really stinks because it is actually $500. Sorry for the horrendous pics but this is all I have to work with. Thoughts (before I spend $500)?

Weight? Does it ring when tapped with another coin? Tough for this modestly educated eye to tell from the pic ... possibly, a cast copy?

Not in my possession so I cannot provide weight or do any additional tests.
In hand, it has a natural patina and surfaces that I would describe as "environmental damage" or just plain corrosion.
Some high spots show a bright copper color coming through where rubbed.

Is it just me or does the plow look awfully close to the landscape for Ryder 4?

It is not Ryder 4. It appears to be a struck copy. My guess is more modern than made to look old. The M in VERMONTIS is a real good clue.
