I've been trying to buy coins with winged boars and finally got my first one. Yeah, it's tiny. Yeah, it's porous. Yeah, it cost $30,944.20* But it's a start for my Pigasus collection!

*calculated by the pound ;-)

When-Pigs-Fly.

IONIA, Klazomenai. Circa 499-494 BC. AR Diobol (9mm, 1.18 g). Forepart of winged boar left / Incuse square. Cf. BMC 9-10 (drachm); cf. Traité I 488 (drachm). VF, toned, porous. Very rare with boar left, apparently unpublished as a diobol.
From the Daniel Koppersmith Collection. Ex Classical Numismatic Group Electronic Auction 256 (25 May 2011), lot 123.

Ionia is modern-day western Turkey, on the Aegean sea. Klazomenai (alt. Clazomenae) apparently had large boars and there are myths about a winged boar/sow.

From http://www.theoi.com/Ther/HusKlazomenaios.html

THE HUS KLAZOMENAIOS was a gigantic winged sow which terrorized the Greek town of Klazomenai in Ionia, Asia Minor.
Aelian, On Animals 12. 38 (trans. Scholfield) (Greek natural history C2nd A.D.) :
"I have heard that on Klazomenai [and island west of Smyrna] there was a Sow with wings, and it ravaged the territory of Klazomenai. And Artemon records this in his Annals of Klazomenai. That is why there is a spot named and celebrated as `The Place of the Winged Sow,' and it is famous. But if anyone regards this as myth, let him do so."

Very interesting token, Philadelphian!

Too bad there aren't any ancient Flying Monkey coins. I'd be all over that.

Cool coin. Your title reminded me of a Pink Floyd Animals tour concert I went to in the '70's.

Jealous! I never got to see them back in the day, only once on a later tour sans Roger Waters (that's OK though, I'm a Gilmour girl )

Argh, FR... that's driving me crazy. I can't remember the scene or exact movie. It's Sellers/Clouseau, right? Love love love those Pink Panther movies. Although I think 'Being There' was his best.

"I am a musician ...... Zee monkey he is a business man.
I do not tell him what to do with his money .......
And he does not tell me what to play ! "

Too bad about the Waters thing. The only man who could get 'Eric' to let er rip like the good ole days (1969 Royal Albert Hall)

These are the pro's and con's of hitch hiking.

this is a pretty appropriate post for an ancient thread that has taken a delightful floyd tangent.

Freeeeekin awesome hobo nickel, Philly. Want want want. Is it yours?

Chris-- thanks for the link. Probably been 30+ years since I last listened to that one! An excellent way to spend an hour :)

I think I had Meddle on 8-track tape, lol. Definitely had it on vinyl.

But the all-time best Floyd album is DSOM. Bet I've bought half a dozen copies over the years, in one form or another. Still listen to it fairly regularly. My favorite album of all time, of any genre. Forever and ever amen.
