Currently on ebay from a seller (I'm not saying who, but the seller's name has a year in it and the name of a popular tire) is a list of some very high grade Canadian large and small cents that appear to be in a high grade of Mintstate.

To me however, they all look like they have been 'whizzed'.

Your comments would be appreciated.

I apologise for a lack of ebay info but I'm not sure of this website's protocol when dealing with ebay offerings.

A real shame that the 1923 and 1925 small cents have been cleaned/polished - they look to be of a decent grade...

Not "whizzed". Cleaned and polished. What a shame! Has some otherwise nice coins listed.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

Aggressively cleaned. More muscle than his sport tires can handle.

From the pics the way the light reflects off this coin I can see how you guys say this looks polished...

I am always interested in learning how to spot different things... So what are some of your "tell tale" signs this is polished..

I mean could there be benefit of the doubt and that this individual used their flash and lighting in a poor way which makes it look polished... or are there other signs on the coin which jump out... if so please share I just would like to learn what to look for.. if you don't want to say it out in public... please message me ..

The surfaces don't look right for such high grade coins.

They should be 'flat' and with only a few marks.

Most of these surfaces have a 'rough' appearance to them.

This is what first alerted me to these coins being potentially 'messed with'.

Another point is there are small halos around letters and dates.

This can indicate the coin has been polished (or whizzed) and the polishing can't get right up against the edge of the letters thereby leaving a 'shadow' area around high points of the coin.

There's other indicators too but these are the main ones.

If all was done was a generous application of wax, then that could be carefully removed. But the bright surfaces indicate he may have used a fine cut grit with the orbital machine prior to the wax job.

Wow, I can't believe how much I've learned, since joining this site.
I never heard about "whizzed coins". Good to know.

Here is a graded sample of a 1920 Large Cent "Whizzed". I put a $50.00 price tag on it's head to make sure no one steals this beauty from me for a song and dance as I use it for reference and as a reminder not to get stupid..

Cheers.
