If the edge isn't original it's a very, very good piece of work. I wonder how much weight such filing would take off the coin?

This seems to me to be a great find !! A possible totally filled in grease on the collar ? Or ? I'm still thinking !! Thanks Dave a great coin to see ... I wonder ?

No, the edge lettering on these coins was made by rolling the planchets between two edge dies. The lettering was incuse on the edge so it was raised on the edge dies. There is nothing to "fill" with grease.

If it's "righteous," the only way it happens is for the planchet to never go through the Castaing Machine. They're known in the series, but maybe only a dozen or so.
