Good morning

I found a 1979 Kennedy that appears to have beautiful gold toning to it.

I have seen gold and silver plated coins and this coin looks like natural toning and not any kind of plating.

But I have read that you can artificially tone a coin so I am not sure if this is the real deal?

Any comments would be appreciated

Thanks

Circulation removes the area highest up on the taller devices. Natural? Possible tampering, possible toning. Hard to tell from an image.

Hi Richard,

Any way to examine and tell if it is natural?

I read all the posts on line about toning - fake toning and I still cannot tell
if this coin is real or not?

Thanks

Toning is a call made by those who collect them. I'm not a big fan of toning. But when I see them at coin shows/stores I may buy them. They will continue to tone even in a 2X2. Albums are notorious for toning coins. The elements in the production affect BU coins.

This one was in a Dansco for years:

Some other uses of toning products are out there. So I look at the toning itself. Real strong colors maybe created and look un-natural. Real toning can affect the outside edges first. Then the center with a rainbow color.

So they can be created by on older cleaning and left in an album for a long time. Some heat coins to create this. Yours just has a yellow tone now. But it may keep toning. (Sulfur in the air makes coins tone yellow.)
But you coin is not a silver coin and my just have something added to it to turn it, or it maybe natural. I would put it in a 2X2 and see what happens with it. Don't wipe it, clean it. Just store it and keep us posted.

I've nothing to add except that I'd die to be the person who owned that 1866 Half.
