Hello. I recently found this quarter while sorting through some coin. It is a very strange item. When dropped it sounds like a normal quarter but obviously looks different. I have to believe it is a fake, but why bother making a fake 1973 quarter?

pretty sure its a fake or fantasy piece.
- the figure looks more like George Bush than George Washington
- the edge isn't ribbed
- the lettering on the reverse is wrong, not correct font and spacing is off

It looks like there is a removable "rim" ring around it, like for a jewelery peice. Anyone else see it?

I figured it was a fake of some sort. But this is the first I have ever hear of "fantasy" coin.

if you can make em cheap and they work in vending machines......

Back in January of 1999 there was a couple that worked their way all the way up the east coast paying for their gas and restaurant meals with rolls of 1999 eagle reverse quarters. (don't know if they used them for lodging) What is odd is since they apparently passed many rolls of the fakes, why don't they show up today? I haven't seen one since the news reports back in 1999.

I think it could have been a bored artist, and decided to retool it.
Odd, for sure. But this goes to tell you, in most cases, many do not pay close attention to their pocket change !
That is a good sign for collectors and cherrypickers.

Hummmm wonder if this coin would be accepted at a bank or Coinstar <smirk>
