i was wondering how people who have put commemoratives in their #7070 set picked them out? I have looked them over in the RedBook and I have picked a few by the obverse pictures on the coins, but I was wondering what other things you take into consideration when choosing these coins.... thanks in advance... PEACE...

I have no personal desire to start a 7070, but if I did, the commems I put in it would be by preference or by price...

I chose my four on design appeal. There are so many commemoratives which have bland designs (IMO) that it was relatively easy to choose the following (in alphabetic order);

Oregon Trail
Panama Pacific
San Diego
Texas

Lots of criteria; all depends upon what you want to see in your set.
The cheapest way is find a high grade common commem.
That's really what a type set is all about.
It allows you to fill holes with high grade coins inexpensively.
Type sets are show pieces.
You get a 1945 Merc in MS-65 rather than a 1916-D in G-4.
The 1916-D goes into your Merc set.

I wanted to obtain coins that were reasonably priced. I also wanted to tell some sort of story with them, so I picked coins that commemorated major milestones in US history. So I went with:

1892-93 Columbus - discovery of the New World
1920 Pilgrim - settlement of America
1925 Lexington - Revolution
1926 Oregon Trail - Westward Expansion

If there was one more slot I would have included a Civil War themed coin...

I added commems that represented the states that I've lived at. For example, I have a Maryland, Delaware, Bay Bridge and San Diego in my 7070.

I do kind of a hybrid of the old and new which are a combination of my favorite designs and the most meaningful ones. The Civil War was an absolute must for me for example.

There are four holes.

The first two holes filled were filled with the 1982 Washington Commemorative Half Dollars (proof and uncirculated). I bought them from the min in 1982, so the choice was easy; break them out of the OGP and add them to the 7070.

The third hole was filled with a Columbian Exposition Half Dollar. I chose this since it was inexpensive and the first commemorative half dollar.

The fourth hole is empty. I am still not sure what I want to put there.

I wish it were that easy, but I have lived in ten states and all of them have a commemorative representative.

@jbuck: No problem! Just buy a blank half-dollar page for your 7070 and fill to your heart's content!

@Stylez: I would suggest selecting coins
  • with which you have a personal connection (e.g., current or former residence, location of college years, etc.)

  • you find particularly attractive

  • for which you enjoy the history behind the coin

Good luck! Keep us posted!

jbuck,
The Statue of Liberty Half is inexpensive and particularly attractive. Water on a coin always looks good.
Definitely a Washington and a Columbian. The first Of the commems old and new.
By golly, that Oregon Trail has my vote!

As I have an on going set of early commemorative (ten to go) I did not want to rob my set for my 7070. I chose Colombian exposition as it was the first commemorative. A 1982 George Washington as it was the first issue during my lifetime. A Oregon trail as it is the most beautiful commemorative coin struck. And I chose one clad the 1995 Civil war battlefield also a handsome design.

Choosing the dollar was also hard with so many choices out there.

I could, I would, but I have no room for it. I already added a blank 16-hole small dollar page to build my date-mint SBA set with proofs (15 coins, with the 1982 Proof Set Medal taking the 16th hole).

The ultimate solution for me is a Dansco 7094.

I will add that the fourth hole in the 7070 will likely be a classic commemorative.

1: Columbia Expo - the first commemorative half
2: Texas - I live here, and have a nice, toned specimen to go here
3: Stone Mountain - Because I consider Stone Mountain in the top 10 or 15 of the designs, and this specimen was too beautifully toned to pass up
4: 1982 Geo. Washington - Because I consider it the last of the classic commems for several interesting reasons.

I started with the affordable and am slowly revolving in designs I like more

I started with
Columbian Expo (this has always been in every attempt I have done at the 7070 with it being the first commemorative half ever and also affordable)
George Washington 1982 (another affordable coin and kicked off the moderns plus its silver this has also been in the 3 sets I have done of the 7070)
Statue of Liberty 1986 (I've always like this design and again it is very affordable)
World War II 1993 (I put this in there to finish the 4 holes originally when I bought the two coin set with the dollar)

The set has changes since then though
Columbian
Stone Mountain (one of my favorite classic commemoratives)
Booker T Washington (because I started a modern commemorative half page in the back of my 7070 and I wanted to move my George Washington to that page and because this was the most affordable classic commemorative)
Statue of Liberty (because I had 2 I bought this one because I really liked the toning).

My 7070 actually has 11 commemorative halves in it with another 4 coming this week as I did the extra page.

I actually plan to change it again eventually I would like to add Oregon Trail and Lexington to replace the Statue of Liberty and Booker T Washington. I am a big fan of commemorative halves though and when I finish my 7070 I might tackle a classic set and if I do my 7070 coins will change again.
