A lot like Adlocutio, but this one is definitely roman. Its uncleaned and its in much the same condition as the PROFECTIO sestertius I have on my mantle.

Trajan-Sestertius---Imperator---Emperor-Addresses-Army

I paid £25ish for it in this state, but I think I can make something nice of it. We'll see what condition its in when it arrives - I have a feeling that the blue is the closest to a patina its got, so it'll be a careful job. Challenging.

My first Trajan - I might as well spring for a good one, even in poor condition.

Obverse legend:
IMP CAES NER TRAIANO OPTIMO AVG GER DAC P M TR P COS VI P P

Reverse legend:
IMPERATOR VIII S-C

Its not a rare one (listed scarce) but theres a lot of nice ones around. I suppose these types find their ways into big collections.

Well if anyone can properly clean it, you can :)

I love that issue. Looking forward to seeing it once you've done your thang.

Ben:
I have cleaned low value Romans, but I haven't the skill to attempt this one!
I would like you to post later on, re your cleaning adventures with this piece.
'Before' and 'after' pics would be nice.

The green stuff is much looser than the compacted dirt. I'm hoping it wont hurt to put it into distilled water for a bit, hopefully get some more detail out but its long past the point of being able to come out well. It seems to have been chemically treated and then waxed but the wax has degraded and the patina has been destroyed. I'm going to clean what I can, expose as many members of the delegation as possible and then seal it in wax and reinforce it with a layer of lacquer.

Im able to get a bit of dirt off but its risking removing the detail preserved in the green stuff.
