Ok this seems like a good challenge.

Found this coin in a 500 Wheat cent bag. I'll add pics when I can. It seems to be made of a gold electroplated aluminum.

Obverse: IOANNES XXIII PONTIFEX MAXIMUS
1960 and has an odd crest I'm not familiar with

Reverse: PRO PROSPERITATE MUNDI / AUREUS MAGNUS
1 Ducat inside a 6-sided cross.

I'm workin on some projects so I figured I'd throw this out to see what comes up

I just bought a hodgepodge auction that had a 500 wheat bag and 3 rolls of Wheats.

I found:
1x 1909
3x 1919
15x 1920's
30x 1930's
35x 1940-42
22x 42+ in XF-MS grade

1960 1 Ducat
English 1 Penny
Canadian 1 Cent x7

OK My photo studio is up and runnin.

The "Aureus Magnus" medals that I know (there are quite a few) are actually gold pieces. Now that does not mean yours is one, but I think they - or some of them - are listed in Krause's "Unusual World Coins" catalog. These gold "ducat" medals were made for Werner Graul by Austrian and German mints; Vienna and Hamburg AFAIK ...

Thanks for the info. I really should get my that book. I have several coins now that are in it.

The weight of this coin is 3.5 grams. the size is right in between a Nickel and a Cent. I doubt this one is gold. Looks feels, sounds like gold plated aluminum.

What I found on it is that the Ioannes XXIII is Pope John XXIII. a few popes before John Paul II from the way I read it. I can be wrong on this though I am not up on the popes. but I also found that they was made by Werner Graul so that may be a start just to look him up . I did that and found a lot of coins that he made in gold and also that they were illegal to bring into the United States until the 1970's I think because of the law about owning gold from after 1933 but I did not get too much deeper than that. hope that helps but if not sorry but hey I did try lol. also I just found that it "could" be around 1/10 OZ gold good luck on that one but hey I have seen some realy cool things come out of a roll of cents lol

OK I did some translations. someone please correct me if this is wrong

PRO PROSPERITATE MUNDI - to clean for prosperity
AUREUS MAGNUS - large golden

It is Pope John XXIII. This is his coat of arms that is on the coin that I did not recognize.

I just now noticed the "980" at 6 o'clock on the reverse. I assume that could mean 98% pure gold.

3.5 grams = .1125 Troy Ounces

That's pretty darn close to 1/10th of an ounce. I only have one gold coin and it's a comm in a coincap so I haven't had any experience with grading/weighing/photographing any gold.

OK I'll stop talkin now and see if anyone else has an answer.

To find a $65 gold coin in a bag of Wheaties has got to be the greatest find I have EVER had.

Found this ebay auction with the exact same reverse

Sounds like the real deal to me... except that this particular design on a 1 ducat isn't listed in my old edition of UWC (however, a large silver "argentus" and a large gold 5 ducats with the same design are listed, KMX# M88 and M109). Anyone got a later edition UWC to check it?

Specs for the gold 1 ducat are 3.45 grams, .980 fine gold, .1087 oz AGW, about 19mm diameter.

The coins are listed under "Germany" because that's where Aureus Magnus, a.k.a. Werner Graul, resided. The six-armed cross design was used on all his "coins". I think "pro prosperitate mundi" means "for the prosperity of the World".

Sap I know your latin is correct because I speak french
pour la prosperite du monde

I see those Aureus Magnus medals in various designs regularly on ebay Germany
medals normally go at a discount to goldprice so I try to stay away from medals

This one is not pristine so 90% of the price of gold would be an acceptable price
