So I see a 1950 nickel for sale advertised as BU.
Doesn't BU mean brilliant uncirculated?

This nickel has obviously seen much wear and tear..

I have been looking around and have seen a lot of non-PCGS graded coins, ah. optimistically seller graded...

Why on earth would I want a 1950-D nickel for 12 bucks?

This hobby seems more subjective then stamps ever were.

thoughts? comments?

There are many sellers who depend on a buyer's inability to grade coins. They deliberately over grade their coins hoping some unsuspecting buyer will take the grade at face value and overpay for the coin. If you are going to buy raw coins you need to become proficient in grading beforehand. This even applies to some TPG coins because many of them are also over graded.

A 1950-D nickel is worth around $12 (I got mine for $5) because it is a low mintage of about 2 million. Also with beaglebailey's post and that is why I have never bought a coin on the internet.

BU does stand for brilliant uncirculated. It is a term that can be used to describe any one of the mint state grades ranging from 60-70 but is more often used to describe coins that grade between MS-60 and MS-62. Coins in those grades may have a number of faults like numerous/heavy marks, poor luster, and/or poor strike. It's easier to sell such a coin described as BU than with one of characteristics listed earlier.

Actually the seller does know grading and he uses BU as what you said.
BU as with many grades is sort of vague. As with AU, that too could mean Almost, About, Used, etc. Check out ebay. It is full of just STUFF like that.
