Nice find. That one is a DDO! Here are some images of the 003 to compare with your coin:  The classic marker are the die scratches through "GOD". But not always present on all examples. |

Where and when and how did you get a 1972 mint sewn bag? Any left?

NUSIMO: I don't personally have any 1972 bags left. I bought mine at a source I wish not to name. The bag in my opinion was not mint sewn shut, but it produced quite a boatload of decent DDO's. I will add that during two passes through the bag our focus was to get all the IGWT DDO's. The "2" issues and "L" issues we did not even look at, so we potentially have a lot of those as well. I use the weekends to get through the bag, and My son and I did it in about 24 man hours. We FLEW through the bag, averaging about 1500 coins per 8 hours. My next bag is going to a 1969-P. So far this fall its been two 1972, one 1979-D and soon the 1969-P will be here. If my eyes don't fall out, I will probably do a 1967 late in the month. |

Yeah Coop, I checked to ensure I had all DDO 3's. No DDO 4's were evident. The Date on all is truly thick and fat, LIBERTY is doubled as well, at least on LIB, some extending to LIBER. Overall we are pleased. I was hoping for a bag that was done in April of 1972 when the majority of the DDO 1's were done. It would have been cool to have a boatload of those. I love the pennies because of the amount of errors. There are a few other issues of coinage that can rival the cent, but I doubt it would surpass. Maybe the Morgan dollar and the VAAM's have a chance, which honestly is what I personally collect to keep. |

If I'm reading your post correctly you found 42 DDO-003's. That is not a boat load, that's a ship full. I've been tempted to get some bags but have not pulled the trigger (yet).

The problem with bags are that they are rarely a big find, but mostly a lot of nothing. When you get a bag, you get examples of the run that filled that bag. Most of the time they are examples of 4-17 different die pairs. When you search these you can isolate the different dies with markers on the coins. If you find nothing in the first 10%, then the other 90% will pretty much be the same.

Bag hunting takes time and a lot of patience. I've been hunting for 1972 bags for a while and when I found a good resource I pounced. Put it this way - in 1972 they made about 3 BILLION pennies. Thats about 600,000 bags ( 5000 count coins) THAT is a lot of bags. And to find one that has a handful of the type 1 DDO's is probably unlikely, but it could happen. Good thing 1972 has a wide variety of errors, making me validate purchasing these. I don't mind the other 1972 DDO's at all. I'll more than likely make most of my cash back, and have about 1/2 the DDO's left to boot. Funny thing is, I am more excited about the 1962-P bag that is inbound to me. The 1962 has a wide selection of errors as well, and I'll see what comes up in that bag over the weekend. The 1962 bag has errors on the Obverse or Reverese, so robotically looking for PUP's on just one side isn't happening. But it should be a lot of fun. |

The neat thing about rolls and bag is this: When you find a variety, find a marker that is common on them. Then when you get a coin, looks for that marker and it will save you some time.

I have 3 of the 1972 DDO 4's. Its an obsession of mine & hopefully when I get time to check for all the die markers on my other 72's with Cuds... I'll have more. Great finds on your part though. I found a 1955 DDO with my dad last week. The things that bring families together. If anyone's interested in #4 let me know. Pics will go up after work |
