Hi All,

Usually post into Canadian NCLT section, sometimes here.
And now need some help, kind of advice or clarification, and since didn't find related thread, starting new.

I want to present a gift for my son, as some coin with his Birth Year, which is 2007. Initially, as an option, I look for the Canada NCLT 2007 coins, and suddenly remembered about Gold Sovereign coin - the coin with extremely appealing design...
But I never dealt with gold, yes, except Bank of Canada Hoard 1912-1914 gold $5 coins.

So, the Sovereign....I think about 2007 Proof edition.
What are they - purely bullion coins, or numismatic? Is it worth to get 2007 as I planned, or some old (key date?) coin will be much more valuable? Is it good idea at all to keep Gold Sovereign for the child?

I will appreciate your clarifications.

The proof version of the 2007 coin (mintage 12,500) is intended for collectors and catalogues at $100-$150 above bullion value. The uncirculated version (mintage 75,000) is traded pretty much as any other bullion coin of similar size, with a slight premium over bullion value.

British-minted sovereigns tend to all be worth about the same, whatever the date (with a couple of notable exceptions like, say, 1879) since very few people can afford to collect the entire sovereign series by date. Colonial-minted sovereigns tend to have a slightly higher premium. Indian mint and Canadian mint sovereigns are the scarcest colonial issues and have the highest premiums on average.

Indian mint sovereigns were only produced one year right? 1918?

Yes, but production is resuming this year:

On the other hand, the Indian gold restrictions (are they still doing that?) might bring this program to a premature end.

The new 'I' mint mark sovereigns are obviously intended for the growing Indian domestic gold market.
The Royal Mint has just seen a commercial opportunity.

You picked a nice coin for your son. I've been collecting sovereigns since 2011 and the Pistrucci design is definitely my favourite of all the coins in my collection.

Thank you, Demarco Bishopp

It not for my budget to collect the Sovereigns, but I did not find some silver coin from this year, that completely answered my taste and requirements (thought about one Canadian and 2007 Proof Britannia)...
And he has many years to grow to get it and appreciate :)

Thanks, milou, for the good words!

Telling the truth, the gold coins are out of my range to collect them, but if to give (and keep) , so it should be something long term lasting.
