I've been fooled once and that was one time too many.
It's possible...........that the cents in the barrel are only a few inches deep. If the barrel WAS full then the plate of the hand cart would have most likely snapped off trying to move it. Also, a few thousand of the cents would have dumped out of the barrel when tipped to move it.
The coins are probably, as in all 'unsearched' rolls, 40's and 50's wheats. I live in Detroit so if the seller wants me to verify the cache I would be more than happy to drive over and take a look at them.

Read the auction carefully, he's selling Five Rolls allegedly put together from that barrel. But not actually in rolls, just in a baggie or similar.
As to moving the drum? I just measured 73 US cents in 1/4 cup (3.6 in^3). or 20.3 per in^3. A standard "55g" barrel is 13320 in^3 so that gives us 270,396 coins each weighing 3.11 grams or 1856 pounds plus the weight of the drum.

You have a good point about the barrel being that heavy. Has anyone ever come across a lot like this?

Not really. Probably a picture that they're just using. That said, I never get into buy "unsearched" rolls.

if the barrel was full he'd have more than 10 available

Quote: Several customers have found Canadian George V (1920 - 1936) small cents in their rolls. No mention, however, of the countless George VI cents that would also be in there from the 40s and 50s. A lack of post-1939 Canadian small cents would be a sure indication of an artificial mix.

It doesn't help that all the feedback says "king george" (or worse, "king g") either. The number matters... (and hey, Queen Elizabeth II's cents start in 1953, so they should be mixed in with those wheats [ending 1957, I think] as well!)

What's interesting here, for the heck of it I bought 10 rolls from 'clawsonbooks' (the link) two+ years ago and did okay. According to my records I picked up 1 G 1924D, 1 G 1932, and 3 G 1923S, in addition to an adequate mix of 20s, 30s, and the usual 40s and 50s. I figured I came out just a little ahead. Not advertising, just reporting. Was lucky. Can't vouch for the barrel...

I saw one years ago, but they were selling at a much more reasonable price, and were sold by the pound. These people at least had the decency to admit that the old man didn't toss the 1909-S VDB's and 1955 DDO's in with the '58s. Anyone who keeps over 250,000 pennies is a collector and would know to search for the key dates and errors.

Also on the Clawsonbooks subject, I recall finding a good number of S mints--a little odd for the Detroit area. There were 3-4 Canadian cents from the 50s.

It could be possible that he saved all of the s mints, and only kept the Canadians he liked.

I also remember that the coins were on the somewhat dirty side--not filthy--but they didn't appear to have been rubbed with a cloth or have been in a cared-for album for several decades. Of course, this was over two years ago. I have no idea what's turning up now though his/her post.
