Silver-Presidential-Dollars?

Silver-Presidential-Dollars?

Got this for change from a token machine at a water park. Didn't know they made silver Presidential dollars. It's in fairly good condition. Would this be plated? The way the Presidential dollars are made I'd assume this could only be plated, correct? And if it is plated, what would it be plated with?

A coin store in my city is offering an "off metal" Presidential dollar like this for $400, but I can't see what kind of blank would cause an actual error like that (leftover SBA planchets in the mix?).

Still, more fun to find than a regular dollar coin

I compared the dimensions (size and weight) to a regular Presidential dollar and they matched so I don't think it's printed on a different planchet. Funny though that you mention SBA because I also received an SBA dollar as part of my change along with this coin

Usually the silver ones are plated. Theres companies out there plating them with everything from gold, to silver, to platinum. Sometimes they plate the whole thing other times they just plate the presidents face and liberty on the back

Looks like a silver plated or platinum plated Home Shopping Network coin.

I am not sure about the plating process for the gold dollars and if a white color is even possible like on a Zincoln cent.

I got a gold plated Presidential dollar in a roll recently. It was probably plated by one of these marketers. I don't know why someone would gold plate a "golden" dollar but obviously it is done. I would guess this coin is either silver or platinum plated. It would not add much weight so you may not tell by weighing the coin.

I would check the edge of the coin. See if the edge is one solid color or if it is clad like an SBA. If it is solid color it is almost certainly aftermarket plated. I do know that some Washington dollars struck on SBA planchets exist. This John Adams being the second coin has a slight chance of being struck on an SBA planchet, especially if they were striking some early in the year for things like mint sets or roll sets.

Something like a silver plated coin could have been made aftermarket to supply the silver President dollars that are listed in the 2000 RedBook.
