Always being on the prowl for the unusual coins for my slabbed 7070, I spied this 1866/1866 Shield nickel and thought that I would watch it and see where it goes. Oh my goodness $2K? It would nice to have but not at the end of auction price.

What am I missing on this?

Yeah, been there many times.
There were coins I wanted so bad but was just not willing to pay that much for them.
Pretty much comes down to what you want to pay.

What you are missing is the realization that you are not the only collector out there who has an eye for something desirable. Today at the Radisson in NH there was an auction of time pieces. The first lot was the exception: several numismatic items. I had my eye on one and I set my limit at $40. It passed 40 and sold at $70. Still, it was fun to sit in and watch for 10 minutes.

Stick by your guns and may you have better luck next time. ( The lots of silver dollars did quite well, nothing special, but the interesting but unpopular items went for well under estimate.)

Wowser. This is a pretty pricey variety, but that was a bit over the top. In PCGS AU55, probably about a $1300-1500 coin.

Probably not an often seen grade for the variety, there are a lot of lowball examples of this coin in the marketplace. In any event, two somebody's wanted it real badly.
