I want to put together a type set of US coinage. I'm starting with easier examples, like I have a 3 cent nickel and a 2 cent piece as well as things like Barber coinage and morgans. I'm not going for expensive coins, just common date circulated examples that still show what the coin looks like.

I looked into 20 cent pieces but WOW were they expensive. Basically after seeing that I decided I wanted help from people who have done this sort of thing before, or at least are familiar with classic coins.

basically I'm using this as a check list:

Obviously I wont be finishing any time soon, but when I finish my degree and have a strong income, maybe I will.

For now my goal is to just start with the easiest things that expand my collection. The 2 cent piece I got the other day for $8 was a very thrifty addition to my collection. Very cool to have one, and its decent enough to put a smile on my face until I upgrade later in life.

Basically, given the info, what are some price points I should look for to get decent examples of classic coins? For example, a Half Cent? I think thats my next buy.

Building a type set can be a very rewarding pursuit and a great way to broaden your numismatic horizons but it can also become quite expensive when you start getting into some of the earlier types such as Seated dollars, Trade dollars, Large Cents, Capped Bust quarters, and Twenty Cent Pieces.

First off you will want to decide what you want to include in your type set. There is no wrong or right way to do a type set, you can make it as large or small as you like depending on your numismatic tastes and budget. Most type set collectors use Dansco 7070 or Whitman type set albums although if you are collecting higher grade, expensive coins you may want to leave them slabbed in their TPG holders.

I have been working on a slabbed type set for the past several years and have been having a blast tracking down the coins for my set. I decided against cracking any coins out. Personally I have found that the Seated dollar, Twenty Cent, and the Capped Bust quarter slots are the most difficult to fill with nice examples partially due to the expense but also the difficulty in finding the right coin. I still haven't bought the Classic Head and Draped Bust Large Cents yet due to their cost in mid-range grades.

Search the forum archives. There are a lot of great threads on type sets. Here are a few .....

Some good observations and a lot of eye candy

Thanks for the info! I think I'm going to start off without a book. I'm using 2x2s in binder pages at the moment. I like being able to organize the way I want.
