Just me again with another Walker.

I have a WLH 1920 S WLH. It is an AU coin and 1920 S is really hard to come by in this condition. It has a few locations with a brown material present. I have loaded photos of the sections.

On the reverse it is on the lower wing tip. On the Obverse it is in the right field.

Has anyone seen anything like this and had success removing with acetone. It is too expensive of a coin to play with so I just want to know if this is something PCGS conservation might be able to handle. It is brown and looks like a flake.

Has anyone ever tried to have a coin like this graded?

Dave, I'm not touching it. I just wonder if that is something someone has had PCGS work on or if it would grade with it. There is no way I'm going anywhere near it.

Also, these were just quick pictures where I wanted extra light on the substance. Please don't grade the photos :)

That's just normal toning; unless the coin has been deemed to be cleaned, it'll have no bearing whatsoever on grading.

From the side you can actually see an edge to it so it is a flake. I had not seen toning like that before so I was confused. Thanks for your advice. It is always appreciated. I had to decide if I was keeping it so that really helped.

Based on what I can see of the breast it is closer to EF than AU. I'd guess if PCGS found a problem it would more likely be a possible cleaning than surface contamination.

Nevertheless, a soak in pure acetone will not harm the coin and it might remove the deposits. I would be willing to try it if it were my coin.

I see no reason whatsoever to dispute this idea.

That is what I thought too, then I started looking at PCGS graded XF45 and AU50-53 coins on ebay and the auction sites. I also read the piece on the David Lawrence website about early date Walkers. I always was a grade or two low on pre 21's. Those coins are graded differently. For instance an XF 45 S mint coin doesn't even need a full well defined breast plate. This one is full.

For now I will leave it. In XF45 it is a $375 coin. In AU it jumps to $600+. It is a very tough year and mint mark to find with surfaces like these. On Collectors Corner there are only 3 listed and 2 are MS64 or higher.
