1922 Peace Dollar Trial Strike - Coin Community Forum

ndwlegal Valued Member United States 160 Posts	Posted 10/09/2013 8:59 pm Do any of the grading services or price guides recognize the trial strike with the detached olive branch as a separate issue for the 1922 Peace dollars? I have been looking for one and have found that it isn't ever attributed or mentioned. I find this odd since the detached olive branch is noticeable to the naked eye and only 10% of the 1922 mintage were trial strikes. On the other hand all sorts of VAMs are attributed and sought after that are often times very difficult to spot. Report this Post to the Staff

Heck, they used it at all 3 mints that year, and even if only 10% of the Philadelphia coins used that hub it still amounts to over 5 million minted at Philly alone. Report this Post to the Staff
jmkendall Pillar of the Community United States 1590 Posts	Posted 10/10/2013 12:40 am Dave, the Whitman book on the Peace dollar has the history of the 1922 Peace dollar designs. It is pretty conclusively proved to be a trial strike reverse. However; after the trial strikes were minted and deemed adequate; the same reverse were used until they wore out. Properly only the 1922P can be considered the Trial Strike. With no way to differentiate the coins minted during the trials period and those minted afterwards. I've heard others give the 10 percent number, but I've been pulling all the B1 reverse 22's for the last 6 years, and it is far less than 10 percent. At least in my sample group.
