I am assuming these coins are the same denomination from the same country with the one on the left being an earlier date. I am also assuming that on the holed coin, the design is a top view of the same flower on the other coin. I am willing to bet that this will be an easy one to identify for those collectors of world coins. Maybe one day I will buckle down and get a book.

You are correct in your assumptions; they're both Japanese 50 yen. The one on the left is Showa Year 31 (1956). The holed one is Year 37 (1962). The flower is a chrysanthemum, the symbol of the royal house of Japan, although I'm not sure the swirly pattern on the later coin is supposed to represent the flower.

Thank you Sap for identifying them. The one assumption I would have been wrong about is the date of the holed one. I was thinking no more than 10 years old because it looks like it was minted yesterday. I guess it has been over here and out of circulation for the last 45 years.
