Hello!
Newfoundland $2 gold coins have one of the lowest mintage for gold coins I've personally seen and I currently am interested in collecting them.
How do you kind folks recommend one starts and in terms of grades is an AU ok or must only focus on MS?

well that will all depend on the old pocket book... The tend to get very expensive in higher grades.... Even in EF you can expect to pay well over 500 for the average coin...

Agree with artdio. Just like with anything else, MS65+ would be most desirable, but you have to find the balancing point between what you desire and what you can afford

First, find the highest price you would pay on the coin. Second, match the price with the grade. If MS is to expensive, go to AU.

Haha the 1880 is off my Rader for now . However I'd like you fellas opinion on this series, is it a good investment? I don't have any interest in making a profit I just don't want to buy something that only heads south. I currently am eyeing a 1885 Au58.

I have all of them, one EF (1865) and the rest AU50, 55 & 58s. As for value, now or in the future, I really don't know... Long term plan is to collect all the maritime coins, except for tokens (I like them too though, lol). I just wanted them in case gold really decided to go up making these go beyond my pocketbook. :)

They are somewhat more tied to the price of gold than the equivalent silver coins are to the price of silver. Particularly at the lower grades. Check http://www.coinsandcanada.com/coins...rs-1865-1888 to get an idea of how prices increase with grade. |

trimble, I also have the while set with a few MS grades including the 1880... Love those little coins.. and if ever the market - collectors decide to go after those, they may just become as valuable as the US gold coins

I quite like the Newfie twos as well. I only have one but it's a doozy, an MS61 PCGS example of the 1880 that I swear is an MS62 all day long. @artdlo may I ask what grade your is? I saw where a Canadian dealer was offering an example in the same grade as mine for 9 grand a while back ... thanks all. Best Regards,  George Edited by giorgio11
