So History has somewhat went back to what put them on the map, telling the story of history and the people who lived it in the times in question via the gold Rush of 1849 in California....

This is a four part series perhaps....

Here are two big names of the time and key story line focused around these two individuals as their fates later would meet apparently (Squatter riots August 1850) over control of the gold fields via Doctor Charles Robinson of Boston company and Samuel Brannan....

The 1st being a true scoundrel of sorts, via Sam Brannan or the 1st true power hungry crime boss if you will of the west coast and California's first millionaires....

Later he took over San Fran and the red light district etc., this guy had his hands in everyone's pockets and if you did not pay you were ran out of town.....

The guy who found the gold to begin with, a fellow named Marshall perhaps made HUGE mistake of paying Brannan with some gold he found, in essence asking him to keep a secret, lol....

He DID not run out to river and start mining gold, no he was WAY smarter then that....

He kept a secret alright, via putting in motion one of the most genius monopoly scams that has ever been perpetrated by any human lol....

First he BOUGHT ever piece of mining equipment he could find within a 1000 miles, in essence creating monopoly on items that were up until now pretty cheap and easily accessed. Not just mining equipment, but food and supplies, lanterns and such....

Then he used his business/printing skills to create the hype so to speak in media right after he went into the streets with the jar of gold yelling...."This gold came from the American river!" over and over again. Until he had created a news paper buzz that span coast to coast....

You see before this stroke of luck which changed his life he ran a rather non successful general store of sorts, the only like it in the area....

His main plan next was set in motion which involved charging insane prices he knew the miners had no choice but to pay. An item that cost a quarter in New York cost 10 bucks in Brannan's store. He was producing today which would be about 2 million a month in profit alone....

Needless to say they all would need supplies no matter how much they had brought from home after a couple 1000 mile track across Indian country, only to find the base of Sierra Nevada's lol. Then they had to Haul those wagons over the steepest mountains in America, same mountains the Dohner party tried to cross two years earlier in great winter of 1847. Only to arrive in a land where Brannan was already rich by the time they arrived...

Many had not ever even heard of California up to this point in time....

This next example appears to be a far better person of the times perhaps in Doctor Charles Robinson. He lost his family to cholera and later in California during cholera outbreak now determined not to lose more lives to this most deadly disease of the times he eventually found a cure of sorts which was a way of treating the disease to prevent death perhaps through re-hydration and other herbal recipes, in essence saving countless lives....

Anyhow check out 1st episode and the rest of the series if you get a chance, as it is pretty interesting history of the gold rush....

My dad always said the people who make the most from a gold rush are those that sell spades and wheel barrows.

A lot of '49'ers who didn't strike it rich came to Bathurst, then the Bendigo / Ballarat goldfields, where their gold was coined into sovereigns, not eagles. Some of them stayed on to become Australians.
