...of the $500 bill being out of circulation, if it is reissued? (1969-2019)

I think they should make one special design in 2019 for the 50th anniversary of the $500 bill being out of circulation, then revert to a permanent design. or at least, have 2019 be the year of the return on the $500 bill, just before they start the next currency redesign with the next new $10 bill.

Has anyone else here given this some thought?

I can't get anyone to take $100s. I can't imagine $500s. People would freak out. It would only be a novelty.

Well It does not make sense yet to go grocery shopping with a $500 note. We have the 500 euro note here and people involved in larger transactions like coin/ bullion dealers or jewelers all accept them without any hassle. But when I try to pay with a 100 euro bill at my local butcher he looks at me as if I just robbed a money transport... Weird thing is there are almost no fake large denoms here. But the 20 and the 50 euro note are the most common counterfeits... And nobody has a problem with those...

I guess a lot depends on what your buying, I have no problem getting rid of $ 100. dollar bills at Currency shows and when buying other high end items.

Fox,
Please keep in mind, the FR and Banks do not exist just to keep collectors happy. They are there to service business and make the world go round, yes I would stock up on some high denomination bills if they would print them, but an "anniversary" issue ?.

They are having a hard enough time printing the new
$ 100,'s, think of the problems they would have with a special "anniversary" issue in the $ 200., $ 500. range.

I don't think they would go for something like that, it would be like the "special commemorative" "RARE" issue stuff that's pushed on those TV shopping shows.

I'll never forget what an old time collector once told me about that type of special stuff, beware of any special commemorative "RARE" issues of anything, "no one can make a real collectors item, it has to become one on it's own.

I think the Government walks a thin line here. Let's face it, the world is becoming a plastic and digital payment world.
It doesn't make much sense to plan new currency when many, many, Americans walk around, the majority of the time, with no cash in their pockets. I know I go for weeks at a time, with no need for cash in my pocket.

But on the other hand, I also own a construction co. and am constantly upgrading tools and equipment, much of which I get from craiglist or from bankruptcy/going out of business sales. These are all cash sales. The cost of everything in the world is skyrocketing. There is still a huge " cash only " market out there. What used to cost several hundred, now costs several thousand. Going to the bank and withdrawing ten $500 dollar bills would be a lot easier (safer) than carrying an envelop of fifty $100 dollar bills.

I must be the only person in existence who doesn't use a debit card. I'm cash only, unless I need to use a credit card for a major auto repair or hotel stay.

I like cash as that it gives me the opportunity to get back change to look it. I also like it so's I can get more of my counterstamped coins out there.

yes, of course you can get rid of $100's easily.. at a bank. try using one at mc donalds , 711 or even target or your local market. either they will flat out say "nothing over $20" or they will use the anti counterfeit pen or whatever they use nowadays.

Debit cards draw directly from a checking account. The limit is the checking account's available balance.

Thanks for the info. I don't think that type of thing would work for me, the only time I do checks is when I have no other way of paying, such as utility bills etc. so I never keep a lot money in the checking account, only enough to take care of things that I cant use cash for.

Really, take a look at this video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SML_pBhaPLM

The people working the cash registers now-a-days don't seem to know or care to know what is going on in the world of the money they handle. Notice that ever the so called "smart" managers don't seem to know much more than the fast food window people. Listen to what the last manager says, ya we take "cash" while he's looking at all those $ 100. bills. It's no wonder that it easy to pass counterfeit money now-a-days.
