I have two ten cent notes that I would like some information on. I would like to know the values and the year.

One is ripped in half but was taped back, the other is damaged.

I had these since 2006, got them from my dad.

I can't seem to find the value, but the year is 1874. The date is on the face side, located on right hand side (verticaly along the side).

They are 10c Fifth Issue Fractional notes issued from July 1874 to February 15th 1876. The portrait is the then recently deceased William Meredith, Secretary of the Treasury from 1849-1850. There were 199,899,000 issued. There are 3 varieties. 1 with a green seal and 2 (like yours) with red seals. The difference between the two red seals is the length of the key in the seal. I can't tell from the pictures whether you have the long or short key variety but the values are the same in any case. Your notes are in pretty rough shape and on a good day only worth a few dollars. The guide for fractional currency is Kravitz book titled "A Collectors Guide to Postage and Fractional Currency" and is the source for this info.

Thanks for the information everyone! I enjoy owning them but the conditions just don't let me enjoy them. I was thinking of trading both of these for a silver quarter or a few silver dimes.

My opinion only.....

Don't trade them away for a few silver dimes or a quarter.

Reason......You got them from your Dad.

I have a complete Lincoln Cent Collection. Some of the coins in that Dansco album are worn, dirty, nicked, etc. I got those dingy old pennies from my Dad and a few of them came to him, from his Dad. My Dad is no longer with us, but his old worn pennies are.
