I'm not sure about this quarter's mint mark.

What do you think?

Thanks for looking .

Looks sus, doesn't it?
It seems to me that that the mm has been shaved off another coin and hard soldered to this one, using a needle torch. The scorching around the mm is very difficult to hide.

Charles M. Larson in his book 'Numismatic Coin Forgery' has devoted a 14 page chapter to the specific subject of coin alteration.

The (dis)coloring right around the mm seriously calls the coin into question.

I'd keep away from any coin that looks that possibly tampered with.

The MM sure does look bad on this coin.....which oddly enough is actually a good sign for this coin, The genuine 32 D and S quarters often have MM that look like they're added and sitting in a depression with discoloration around them.

The boldness of the mint mark, style, and the depression it seems to be in look correct.

MM looks the way it should for a genuine 32-S.

It looks like mine. What I've heard with this one is if it looks bad, then it is probably good and vice versa... I'm not certified in any of this though :)

It looks wrong to me but keep in mind I am no expert.
I would stay away from it.

I've seen a lot that have the same discoloration around the MM.

This discussion has sent me scurrying for Google images and Google search for more info.

I now see that I have a bit more to learn about '32 S quarters.

There seems to be a depression around the 'S' on most of the images I have found. I am not sure if some of these are genuine or not, no matter who is selling them.

Since these coins would be a prime target for coin alteration I would not be happy with my current knowledge to permit myself to buy a '32 S, slabbed or not. For me, Heritage or similar would would be about the only place that I would make an exception and buy a '32 S just now.

The same sort of due diligence needs to be applied when considering the purchase on an Australian 1930 Penny.
