Nice! I very much look forward to hearing your impressions of it as a coin camera. While you're at it, don't hesitate to take it outdoors and shoot some stuff to post in General Discussion - you live in the most beautiful city in one of the most beautiful countries on Earth.

I've been keeping an eye on Dyxum posts re the A7r.....seems it can be operated remotely....via wifi, NFC, or USB cable.....looks like this monster has all the bases covered you can even control the shutter release via a smart phone!

That's good to hear, and not really surprising; the tech is already in place and it's only a matter of time before pretty much all cameras have it. Heck, Sony's about to drop two on the market that require a smartphone to operate. http://connect.dpreview.com/post/1040220037/

I hope you'll write a blow by blow of your impressions of this camera, as I think you may have it earlier than most and if it is as capable as I expect it to be I will want to buy one.

Quote: I think you may have it earlier than most that remains to be seen...it seems only a few of the first orders in Austria are going to get the camera in mid November....I was told I may have missed out on the early bird delivery...... The frustrating thing is a the A mount adapter will arrive in two weeks...talk about teasing!!

Quote: one thing that's always infuriated me about Sony is the astronomical prices they charge for their accessories, and that adapter is a prime example One of my BIGGEST pet peeves with Sony and one reason why I never ventured into testing their higher end audio stuff either. Everything was Sony specific with their stuff. I'm a fan of universal cables and accessories and Sony never allowed that. Kind of like the PC devil Apple. Having said that, I am anxiously awaiting some photos with this rig!

Quote: Everything was Sony specific with their stuff Actually with the A7r sony seems to be going the other way they have openly published the exif data making it easier for third parties to produce chips, lenses and adapters ie: no licencing fee or back engineering. As a number have commented on dyxum it seems with the A7 & r they seem to be approaching the market in a different way....yes the sony adapters are expensive...the LA_EA4 is expensive because it brings the AF focusing up to the A 65 level and allows A mount lenses to be used on the e mount. The 3rd party adapters are cheap.....I will be using A mount and more interestingly old minolta MC/MD mount lenses on the camera. Its the first time someone has produced a camera that will readily work with old manual lenses. A number of Cannon and Nikon professional owners are talking about adding the A7r to their tool box simply because they can get to use the lenses they already have......so I don't think the Sony specific argument applies here. I have separately purchased a novoflex MD-e mount adapter...at €119.00 its the most expensive on the market..... photodiox sells one for US$79.00. You can pick up other makes for around US$30-US$50( but the cheaper they are the more chance of bad design and poor infinity focus). this means that although the Zeiss lenses are expensive you can revert to old manual lenses that cost in the range $50-300. I do think I may have made a small mistake buying the LA -EA4 adapter... the reason...that adapter has a translucent mirror...for macro I think the cheaper LA EA3 adapter would be better( no light fall off as no mirror). However that adapter will work well for in te field so its not a biggy.

Will MC/MD/SR lenses mount directly? What about other Sony cameras?

SR lenses will mount on the A& and A7r...... Thats one of the things that sold me on the system. As the camera is mirror less the sensor mount distance is much smaller than on a DSLR.......that means the SR lenses can be mounted using a simple optic free MD-e mount adapter. For the first time since the A mount was introduced the SR lenses can be used as they were first designed. Even better the focus peaking system makes the manual focusing much easier. So all though the cameras aren't cheap the lens options are extensive. When I finally get mine I have the following MD lenses to try out : 50mm f2, 28 mm W F2.8, 50mm 3,5 macro and the 85mm varisoft( but not for coins!)
If you were looking at a cheaper option APS-c then Sony nex would give you the same lens options( actually some of the old full frame SR (MD& MC)lenses might perform extremely well on the NEX. The same adapters apply and focusing peaking is also available to assist manual focusing.

I ask because I was lucky winner of a couple of Minolta grab bag auctions. I low bid on a recent auction that had a complete macro system...Auto Bellows III (tilt/shift), macro stand and focus rail, Microscope adapter, and an elusive compact bellows. Plus I just won another auction with yet another AB III and stand, plus all accessories, Minolta copy stand, etc. A while back I picked up a group of small Bellows III's and have ended up with several 100mm macro bellows lenses as well as recently a 50mm, so I have Minolta MD stuff coming out of my ears. Maybe I need a Sony camera for Xmas...

I think I saw that auction...... For the bellows and bellows lenses you can probably find MD- to(your camera mount adapter) the other option would be to find a Sony Nex and then all you will need is a MD-nex adapter. From my research its better to get a more expensive adapter. the cheap ones can be out by a a small amount and so stuff up the infinity focus. Novoflex, Meta bones and fotodiox produce the most reliable adapters. Basically the adapters are just a tube.

Well the rumours are flying think and fast. All the bets are on Sony announcing at least one new full frame camera in the new year. It remains to be seen what part of the rumours are going to be proved right: but the most common prediction is 46 mp Full frame. 5 axis image stabilisation( who needs that for coins?) Af speed comparable or better than the A6000, No one has said it yet but I assume there will be an EFCS
