A7R: 36MP FF, EFSC can be assumed since Sony implements in in their high-end NEX and Alpha cameras, and no OLPF. Wider pixel pitch than Canon's 18MP APS-C. All for $2299.

I don't care if Sony has no remote shooting software. Anybody got $2300 I can borrow?

WOW.....very tempting. Given that they are using the emount and a full frame sensor I would suspect the old Minolta MC and MD lenses would be brilliant and heaps cheaper than the new lens series Sony is producing for these cameras. The old MC?MD lens don't work well on the alphas but perform brilliantly on the e-mount....MMMM and I have some spare cash! A 36mp full sized sensor does that mean there's a replacement for the Alpha 99 in the works? Edit probably this is the end of the Alphas I think I may have a new camera in a MOnth!

They won't ship until December - preorder only right now and move fast if you're going that way as a dogpile of prospective buyers is expected. And there's a strong caveat; nobody as yet has physical test results from either the A7 or A7R. My optimism is based exclusively on the feature list and the expected (but not confirmed) EFSC.

Looks like Sony is going Alpha-only on brand designation; NEX as a denominator is going away. I'm expecting lower-level "traditional" Alphas with APS-C to continue for a while to occupy the "entry-level" niche. Given the constant improvement in EVF tech, I'm guessing SLR will be obsolete soon but the market still exists.

Nice. If EFSC is confirmed I may just go for it. Do any software packages work to control the Sony cameras?

I'm awaiting confirmation whether software from DNA Software allows full control of the Sony from Adobe LR. Their website is unclear on the issue. It's known to the person I've contacted that the A7/A7R will support remote capture. And the DNA Software solution is cheap.

I'm way too invested in Canon "L" glass to ever switch. But the new Sony does look impressive.

NOt here in Austria... the Sony site says they well be available from mid november

Edit did some checking: For current sony SLR owners this new camera is interesting( and a little scary if one owns a lot of Alpha mount glass).....to use the alpha mount lenses One has to buy an adapter( Aprox US$300.00) the adapter, if I understand correctly, has a translucent mirror and a tripod mount. There is also a battery pack US$300.00 that is probably a must if you take heaps of photos at one time. As for using the old Minolta full frame manual lenses: I am checking with http://fotodioxpro.com/ to see if their adapter ( not cheap) will work on the 7R. I am fairly confident it will. the good thing is that adapter doesn't need an extra optical element. I am hoping that a lens like this

Will perform as it did on the film camera it was designed for.

These new cameras can use your Canon glass and most other popular lenses with an adapter, without loss of quality.

It's not looking good for tethering like we're used to on the Canon scale.

Austrokiwi, one thing that's always infuriated me about Sony is the astronomical prices they charge for their accessories, and that adapter is a prime example. I fixed your link, by the way - your language-correct "o" character broke the forum's automatic parsing. I'm going to mention that to see if we can't get the forum code changed.

Ooooh. Breaking News:

PC control w/ remote video capture control

Remote Camera Control allows you to control your α7R from your PC using a USB cable. Feature control has also been updated to include video capture control.

Steve Huff is a name I trust in the camera-geek business, and he's practically consumed by mindless ecstasy over the A7R. Frothing at the mouth aside, he doesn't normally get his facts wrong, but some of the copy in his first impressions is obviously boilerplate. I'm guessing, though, that this means the A7's will be controllable (in the sense we consider it) from the computer. What I don't know is if that includes Live View focusing.

I don't know why I'm so excited about this - I'll never be able to afford one.

$2300!

I am trying to make my Olympus 6MP 10X optical zoom work for now.
It hasn't let me down in 8 years.
I just wish it had a shutter release. I have a very steady hand but please..

I use a cheap digital camera, and I have found that setting the timer allows me to remove all human contact from the camera for the picture. This seems to help me.

What appeals to me with this new offering is the remote capture possibility. I note that steve huff has stated it needs a USB cable......and My reading of the sony specs doesn't seem to report this. The camera does have wifi connection to smart phones so somewhere some time someone will develop Wifi remote capture ( if its not there already) as for price yes the US$2000 + cost seems frightening ( just for the body with an alpha mount adapter, battery grip and a lens(you only get the body with the 7R) the actual cost is going to be closer to US$3000.00 plus. However as people found with the nex people will be able to use cheap( but brilliant optics) manual lenses on the unit. As I understand it the only comparable camera on the market is US$5000 +. I am still thinking about the True SLTs....with the new Chip and massive sensor there must be a replacement for the Sony A99 just around the corner! It may be worth waiting a bit to see what else is coming( in the new year). My fantasy would be an A99 replacement with the lens flexibility of this new product.

The price is not at all out of line for what you get; the A7 is on a par with the Canon 6D and Nikon D600 and the A7R, well, 36MP!

Wifi tethering is uncommon; I don't know of an app off the top of my head. With that said, I see no reason why any current wifi-equipped camera with tethering capability won't be able to utilize it with a firmware update, once somebody writes an app. It'd be ideal for wildlife photography, for instance.

I don't know where they're going to go with the A99 from here. The A99 is an EVIL camera, not a "true" SLR, and the A7's duplicate its' capabilities and extend them, just in a smaller package.

I have really thought hard......I am 98% all the way to the point of pr-odering the A7r, with Battery grip and Sony alpha mount adapter. If I go ahead with the purchase I will not be buying the new FF e-mount lenses I will instead rely on the old Full frame Minolta MD, and Minolta/Sony A mount lenses I already have. the more I have read the more that I think Sony is going to abandon the Sony Alpha mount system cameras......They don't compete well with Nikkon and cannon and this new camera is a game changer

I decided and have ordered the A7R. It may arrive mid November( so I was told) I really want to know first hand how the FF sensor will perform taking coin photographs.
