46mpx--wow! That's near the resolving limit of better lenses, I think? So I handled an A7R at a camera show the other day--feels very solid and compact. Although I actually prefer a larger body to counterbalance my lenses in the field--I shoot mostly hand-held.

Theres more information out there is actually two cameras. One just announced. The Sony A7II 24mp five axis image stabilisation and fast AF speed. The second camera is the one I will be saving desperately for. A professional level Mirrorless camera. This is the 46mp monster, It will have an EFCS( so it is assumed). The sensor is completely new. The camera will be larger than the A7 series cameras. It is likely to have even faster AF( For sports Photographers) It will probably have the five axis image stabilisation. This camera is apparently designed to compete with the pro level Nikon and Canon Full frame Cameras. I suspect it will be Canon killer. Price wise from what I have heard it will be more than the A7s and about the same( probably less) than the Nikon D810. Given that the Otus 85mm( not made for Sonys e mount) performs best on the A7r( lab tests) I suspect the new Camera will really bring the best out of many top level lenses.
On the A7r I like it as it has a built like a tank feel. I do know some don't like the small size but when you like me( small hands for a bloke) the size is not an issue. the fact that every button is customizable means I am able to have the functions where I want them. As for larger lenses. I know what you mean I use some heavy legacy glass on mine. Recently with the Mamiya medium format lenses I observed the flexing mount many had complained off. I simply purchased Fotodiox's tough e-mount and installed it. (Apparently Sony is putting a solid mount in all A7r's and A7's that go in for service)

Wow. A 46MP FF pro-level MILC. The camera geek in me is giggling uncontrollably - that's practically enough sensor to abandon >1:1 magnification. Mag? I don't need no stinkin' mag.

Seems next year might be the year of the Mega pixel wars. There are rumours that canon will be coming to battle with a +50mp camera. It will be interesting to see if this battle occurs. I suspect the canon will be a DSLR and most bets are on the sony being a ILC ( mirror less) For me a Mirror less with IBIS (In body image stabilisation) plus an EFCS would be the winner.. It means short length primes from Leica etc could be used with spectacular results. I know image stabilisation is normally a pain for photographing coins but with 5 axis stabilisation the game might change again.

Just give me a FF camera with EFSC/EFCS, wired tethering capability in Live View, and no AA filter. Please? Anyone?

For a FF sensor, that's approx. 8660 x 5773 px (or 4.2µ pixel size), and quickly approaching the smallest resolving pixel at 4µ, ie 9000 x 6000 pixels or (36/004 x 24/004). The real question is, can the lenses match that resolution? The limits of diffraction are going to kick in that much sooner...

A 50MP dSLR means a 120MP Medium Body, if someone feels like doing it... Wonder if anyone's good enough to make a lens worthy of the beast.

As I said they are rumours( picked up on sonyalpha rumours and Canon watch). You wonder about the lenses And it does seem that the rumoured sensors are not going to have glass to compliment them......I know sony and other manufacturers have been playing with curved sensors( but so far only for cell phones) If someone were to develop a Curved sensor for a decent camera we could see very high resolution lenses. The Petzval design would be become a cheap way to make phenomenal and much cheaper lenses!!

Quote: I think the Nikon D810 already covers it. the price is a bit of a kill joy though If the D810 did what I wanted I would already have purchased one, though with all the rumors floating around from various manufacturers I may be glad I waited. 4um sensor pitch is definitely getting tight. My T2i has 4.3um pixels, and has DLA around f/6.7. 4um pixels would put you around f/6.2. This means you need a lens that is diffraction-limited at f/3.1 at 1:1. I only know of one lens that fits the bill...

Ever since Digic 5, it was clear that Canon would have a processor that was up to a FF with APS-C pixel density. Even better to drop it on the market with a generational increase in density and Digic 7. Of course, one can assume Nikon is in the same neighborhood.

Quote: the D810 will be obsolete... It is already obsolete if you want a smaller form factor and an electronic viewfinder, ie A7R. As you know, a dSLR might have more features to offer than just those things.

Still have not got the chance to use my roommates Sony A7r to shoot macro photos of coins yet, the photos I've seen taken with it are simply stunning. Canon has quite a ways to go to catch up in the sensor department right now.
