Ottawa, Ontario, October 18, 2013 - - " The Royal Canadian Mint continues to stand out in the running for Krause Publications' annual Coin of the Year awards, after eight coins issued in 2012 were nominated for awards to be presented next February at the 2014 World Money Fair in Berlin. This is the most nominations earned for the last four consecutive years by any national mint or central bank recognized by Krause Publications for their numismatic achievements.

The Mint's exceptional collector coins lead a large field of international competitors by receiving nominations in eight different Coin of the Year categories, specifically: Most Historically Significant Coin; Best Gold Coin; Best Silver Coin; Best Crown Coin; Best Circulation Coin; Best Bi-Metallic Coin; Most Innovative Coinage; and Most Inspirational Coinage.

"Quality, innovation and craftsmanship are important values at the Royal Canadian Mint which we are proud to see acknowledged in each of our coins nominated for a 2014 Coin of the Year award," said Ian E. Bennett, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "It takes exceptional coins to appropriately showcase Canada's history, culture and values and we are proud that the work of the talented employees of the Royal Canadian Mint is once again receiving international acclaim."

The Mint's 2014 Coin of the Year award nominations are:

Most Historically Significant Coin
2012 25-cent circulation coin: 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 "Sir Isaac Brock"

Best Gold Coin
2012 1/25 ounce Pure Gold Coin - - " The Penny

Best Silver Coin
2012 $20 Fine Silver Coin - The Penny

Best Crown Coin
2012 Queen Diamond Jubilee - - " Portrait in ultra high relief in fine silver

Best Circulation Coin
2012 $2 commemorative circulation coin: 200th Anniversary of the War of 1812 "HMS Shannon"

Best Bi-Metallic Coin
2012 $5 Sterling Silver and Niobium Coin - - " Full Wolf's Moon

Most Innovative Coinage
2012 25-cent "Glow-in-the-Dark" Prehistoric Animals - Pachyrhinosaurus Lakustai

Most Inspirational Coinage
$5 Fine Silver Coin - - " 25th Anniversary of the Rick Hansen Man-in-Motion Tour

The annual Coin of the Year competition receives nominations from an international consortium of mint representatives and numismatists. The judging is conducted by an international panel of the world's leading mint officials, medalists, journalists, central bank and museum officials. The awards will be presented in Berlin, Germany, at the 2014 World Money Fair, which is being held from February 7-9, 2014.

I still amazed that the mint never made a gold penny in the corect size.
Or better yet a gold 5 penny set like the silver one :-)

Nice, thanks CC-Ottawa, for topic and URL.

I expected "Two Loons" to be there too.
And our silver coin - IMO "1/2 oz Farewell to Penny" much better than "20for20".

And if GITD Dyno will win in it's group - will we see "Gulo -Gulo" effect (coins in GITD serie for $500-$2000)?

I like both suggestions and I think they will eventually goes back to milk that.

The gold SML fractional is around $4000 so the gold Penny fractional will be in the same price range. I would like to see Gold Penny with the size of the real penny. That would be nice

I have them all but the 2012 Queen Diamond Jubilee... something about those coins turn me off.

It's nice to see the Rick Hansen coin getting some recognition.

The $2 Shannon is by far the best $2 design ever, and one of the best Canadian circulation coins in history.

I agree with ksimms3, that the Rick Hansen coin is in the running and getting some recognition. The detail in this coin are quite high!
