I returned from a trip to my local coin shop with a couple of 2012 CPZ penny rolls this weekend. I spotted a couple of abnormal rims and bought both rolls. Anyone want to hazard guesses about how these pennies were damaged before I free them from their mint plastic wrap? In the first roll the damaged penny appears to be slightly elongated on the side opposite that shown. In the second, the damaged penny shows undulation over most of its circumference.

The top roll almost looks like you may have an almost clipped through example. Can't wait to see what you have. Will keep watching! Thanks for sharing

Are multiple rolls like that? You could have a rarity on your hands....

Well, the first penny is not as interesting as I had hoped. Looks like it got pinched some time between strike and sausage casing.

And here's number 2. A bit harder to photograph a coin that isn't flat.

Considering they came out of mint wrap they are kind of interesting, especially the first one.

Nice pics! The good thing is you have the pictures to prove those were in the roll.
Still a neat rarity for the last year of the penny!

Thanks, guys! Does anyone feel the damage to coin #1 could have happened pre-strike, or even pre-plating, i.e., a deformed planchet? I would have thought that a normally struck penny receiving a heavy and rough squeeze on the rim post-strike would show some of the zinc core.

Very true, it almost looks as if it happened before it was plated. Maybe its all copper! Lol
