At work again so no pics.

Just finished looking through my recent ebay gotta buy something fix.

In there was a silver Japanese 20 SEN.

It looks like a decent coin.

How do I figure out the date.

A few are a little pricey, bookwise.

As always, thanks in advance.

The examples given there on the Don's World Coin Gallery page linked to above are good for reading the Japanese date. Unfortunately, it has a mathematical error in the calculations to convert to AD dates, because the first year of an emperor's reign is "Year 1", not "Year Zero". So the calculated dates all have to have 1 subtracted from them.

Thus, for the third example: Year 56 of the Showa Era (Emperor Hirohito) is actually AD 1981 (1926 + 56 - 1).

Meiji Year 32. That makes it 1899.

But hang on - Emperor Mutsuhito began his reign in 1867 - and 1867 + 32 - 1 = 1898. Why doesn't the maths work out correct for Meiji coins?

It's because while Mutsuhito did begin his reign in 1867, he did not initiate the Meiji Era until the following year, 1868. The first year of his reign was still considered the 3rd year of the previous era, the Keio Era. Thus, Meiji Year 1 was actually the second year of reign of Emperor Mutsuhito, 1868. They did not formalize the traditions of one-Emperor-one-Era and changing the era name as soon as a new emperor was crowned until during the Meiji period.

1868 + 32 - 1 = 1899.
